Ground-wide Wi-Fi a big success
The results have been outstanding.
2019 was a big year for Somerset County Cricket Club both on and off the field because the Club was selected to host three important matches in this summer’s showpiece ICC Cricket World Cup.
That meant that the eyes of the world would be on Taunton whilst cricket supporters from every corner of the globe would be descending on Somerset’s County Town to sample what we have to offer.
This was the perfect opportunity for SCCC to secure a long-term upgrade to the existing wireless offering in order to, amongst other things, greatly improve the matchday experience for all supporters.
“Our aim is simple,” said Commercial Sales Director Suzanne Roper. “We want to be the best on the field and off it. Fans want to engage with social media throughout the game. They also expect live replays of key moments. For this audience, high-performance wireless is non-negotiable.
“We can send tailored messages to fans and ensure no one misses a moment of the action. We can track queues or create promotions that are relevant to individuals. Everything is in place to drive major improvements to the fan experience.”
SCCC and ITEC worked in partnership with Aruba, who installed the Wi-Fi infrastructure, to create a solution that ensures high-performance network access in and around the ground, which is able to accommodate 9,000 concurrent connections.
The solution, which was designed by ITEC, also enables the Club to manage any data securely, ensuring that the private information of Members, ticket buyers and event attendees is in safe hands.
SCCC Strategy Director, Sarah Trunks is delighted by the outcome. “Customer experience is what we set our stall on,” she said. “We wanted to deliver something that could cope with our current demands but also grow with us in the future.
“We had tremendously positive feedback from visitors following the World Cup and our customer experience score in that regard was the highest for the tournament.”
It’s not just the cricket side of the business that has benefitted from the installation as Sarah explains. “The Cooper Associates County Ground hosts all manner of conferences and events throughout the year and the new solution has ensured an improvement in the already exceptional event delivery here at the venue.
“We know that what the Wi-Fi will be able to bring in and generate over the next five years will help to drive the Club forward. This will help to put Somerset County Cricket Club on a global map when it comes to showcasing what we can deliver.
“I would also like to thank ITEC for all their support throughout the planning and installation of the Wi-Fi solution and we look forward to continuing our successful partnership over the next few years as we seek to further improve our infrastructure.”
