Hundreds attend Mike Coggan funeral
Over 400 mourners gathered in the County Room of the Colin Atkinson Pavilion today to say farewell to Mike Coggan.
Mike and his wife Mary Elworthy are known to most Somerset supporters for their tireless and outstanding fundraising efforts on behalf of the Taunton Area Committee.
Andy Caddick, Marcus Trescothick, Keith Parsons, Rob Turner, James Hildreth and Peter Trego acted as pallbearers and the flag at the Cooper Associates County Ground flew at half-mast.
The First Team squad also provided a guard of Honour as Mike left the ground for the final time.
Former Somerset CCC Chairman Andy Nash, who knew Mike well, said: “Mike Coggan was as passionate and loyal a Member and supporter as any club could wish for. His knowledge of the game was immense and when asked he was never short of a keen observation on the state of the game. The annual barbecue at the family home in Fitzhead has become an eagerly anticipated Club fixture and as well as raising substantial funds it plays an important role in bringing players and fans together socially.
“Mike was a Somerset man through and through and he will be very greatly missed by Mary, his family and his many friends.”
Following the service, the first funeral to be held at Somerset County Cricket Club, a private ceremony took place at Combe Florey.
The thoughts of everyone connected with Somerset County Cricket are with Mary and her family.
