Jamie feeling good as his rehab continues

Somerset supporters will have been buoyed by the sight of pace bowler Jamie Overton going through some drills on the outfield during the intervals of our recent Specsavers County Championship match against Middlesex.

The 23 year old started 2017 in fine style, claiming 12 wickets in the five Specsavers County Championship matches in which he featured. That form earned him a call up to the England Lions squad in June but sadly he sustained a back injury during that get-together and hasn’t been able to feature for Somerset since.

It’s been a long road back to recovery but Jamie is delighted that he is finally starting to get some grass back beneath his boots. “I feel really good,” he said earlier this week. “I’m optimistic and feel that what I’ve been trying to do is now working. I’ve just got to stay positive and at the moment things are going really well.

“I’ve been trying to change the position of my feet to try and be a bit more front-on when I bowl in order to try and take a little bit of load off my back. It’s going well at the moment and feels good. It certainly feels a lot more natural now that I’m getting used to it. It’s all coming along nicely and I’m looking forward to next year already.

“The rehab programme has been going really well. There’s been a lot of gym work to help strengthen my core and my back to help prevent a similar injury in the future. We thought that I might be ready for the last couple of games of the season but we felt that it was important to make sure that everything was 100% where it needed to be and that I wasn’t rushed back. The most important thing was to make sure that I don’t get a similar injury again in the future”
