Jason outlines winter plans

The locally based Somerset players reported back for training last week to start their winter programme.

This initially consisted of undergoing a series of fitness tests.

Reflecting on the first few days Head Coach, Jason Kerr said: “The mood of the boys is great and it felt like the first day of school when they came in last week. It’s good to see that all of the lads have made a good recovery after putting in some serious work last season and they are all excited ahead of 2019.

“The players went through all of their medical screenings to make sure that there are no issues leading into the winter, now they’ll each be following very bespoke programmes.

“We’ve got several of our players involved with the Lions and guys away competing in various tournaments around the world, so we will look after their needs from a distance.

“The emphasis before Christmas will in general be on conditioning with some skills for a few selected players. We will then ramp up the skills when we come back in the New Year, whilst retaining the conditioning side of things and building towards another exciting year and pre-season.”

This year the pre-season programme will be different to 2018 as Jason explained.

“Last year we had the marquee,” he said. “But with the floodlights going up this won’t be possible. The marquee was fantastic, but the time that we can have that this year due to the floodlights is very slim. The best alternative is to go abroad and play some competitive cricket.

“This year we’ll be looking to go abroad in pre-season to make sure that the guys get some practice out on grass, and more importantly get some competitive cricket. Last year we went into the first game only having had two days preparation because of the weather.”

Somerset are likely to get the chance to play against other First Class counties when they are abroad as Jason explained.

“We will be going to Abu Dhabi for two weeks in early March,” he said. “Two First Class counties have confirmed that they will also be out there and I know that another are also looking at going. That means that there will be some strong opposition for us to play against in order to get that competitive sharpness.

“When we come back we’ll play a couple of competitive friendlies before we get into the First XI fixtures.”
