Jason reveals pre-season friendlies

Ahead of the 2018 season Somerset County Cricket Club will be playing a number of pre-season matches.

We will begin with a T20 double header against local rival Gloucestershire at the Cooper Associates County Ground on March 19th before hosting the same opposition in a 50-over match the following day.

Worcestershire will then visit Taunton for a two-day match on March 22nd before Somerset travel to Edgbaston for a three-day game on March 26th.

The traditional University match will then see Somerset take on Oxford MCCU at Taunton Vale over three days from April 13th.

Following the announcement of these friendlies Head Coach, Jason Kerr said: “For pre-season it’s important that the cricket is as competitive as possible. We’re going to start with some white ball games against Gloucestershire when we play two T20’s. That will give us a chance to see most of the squad in action and get them some competitive cricket. We will then play a 50-over game the following day. We’ll then move on to red ball cricket and build the intensity as we get closer to that first Specsavers County Championship match against Worcestershire.

“During pre-season I feel that it’s important to play all three formats of the game. Starting with two T20’s will give all the squad a chance to play, feel valued and feel like a part of what we’re trying to achieve. Inevitably as we move closer to the first game we will concentrate that down to the squad that is going to be selected for that game. It’s important that everyone’s involved.

“In pre-season friendlies the challenge is to match the intensity that you would get in a competitive game. There’s less pressure and that is something that we will be looking for our players to address mentally. We will be looking to build that intensity during the course of the pre-season period and being as competitive on the park as we can be. We need to make sure that when we take to the field on the morning of that first game, we are ready to go because once again we miss out on the first round of matches. I would love us to be playing in the first group of fixtures the week before we play Worcestershire but that is the way the fixtures have fallen this year. We need to make sure that we are ready to go and not rusty in the slightest.”
