Joel returns from England duty
Somerset County Cricket Club’s Head of Strength & Conditioning, Joel Tratt, has been spending time with the England white-ball squad recently.
Joel was invited to be a part of the staff for the recent ODI series against Sri Lanka.
We spoke to him earlier this week to discuss his experience.
“I got a call from the ECB when we were at Bristol for the four-day game against Gloucestershire asking if I’d be interested in providing S&C support for the Sri Lanka series,” he explained. “I obviously said yes, and it was awesome to be asked and to be given the opportunity.
“My role was to help provide daily prep for the guys when they were practicing and playing. I was also helping with their gym work and working with some of the lads on a couple of niggles. There was also the nutrition side of things. It was essentially what I do here but within their environment.
“I’m massively appreciative to Andy Hurry and Jason Kerr for giving me the opportunity to work away during such a busy part of the season. I feel like I’m a product of the Somerset coaching system. Obviously, we regularly see players come through our pathway and on to the pro staff and my journey has been similar. I started off here as an intern, now I’m the lead S&C and now to have spent time with England is brilliant.
“I’ve taken a huge amount from it. There are some things that I can put in place here, but it also reinforced that the things that we are doing are really good. We are doing things that are on a par with what’s happening at international level. We can take confidence from that because how we go about our business here is the same as how the best team in the world do it. It was awesome from both a learning and reassurance perspective.”
Joel was also quick to praise James Alway, who took over his role whilst he was away.
“Jim is brilliant,” Joel said. “We couldn’t function as a department without him. He deserves this opportunity because he’s a really special coach and a great guy. The boys absolutely love him and by all accounts it was a seamless transition. I’m really grateful to him for stepping up whilst I was away.”
