Meet the Academy intake: Charlie Sharland
Over the last few days we have been introducing you to the new players on the Somerset Academy.
Today the spotlight falls on Charlie Sharland.
Middle order batsman Charlie, who attends King’s College and plays cricket for Taunton Deane, said: “I’m really very excited to become part of the Somerset Academy. I joined the EPP last year, so it’s all happened quite quickly for me.”
Charlie has had a pretty hectic summer as he explained. “I was part of the team that won the Bunbury Festival which was really exciting,” he said. “I also managed to get a couple of 50s, which was good.
“I played for Taunton Deane First XI as well and we won Premier Two, so we will be in the WEPL Premier Division next season. I played in the Somerset Under 17s squad this year and we did quite well, finishing second in the three-day league.”
How does Charlie see himself as a cricketer?
“I’m a batter mostly and I like to go in at number four, but I also bowl as well. Earlier this year, when Somerset Under 15s toured Sri Lanka, I scored 115. This winter I’m really looking forward to being on the Academy.”
Where does Charlie hope he will be in four years time?
“Hopefully I will have a contract at Somerset and be pushing for a place in the first team,” he said. “That’s still a long way off though.”
SCCC Academy Director, Steve Snell said: “Charlie impressed in the Somerset Under 17s this season and he opened the batting in white-ball cricket. His ability to score quickly and to move the game forward was evident and it was really good to see him in a number of different games and age groups this year producing some real innings of substance.”Back to News
