Meet the Academy Intake: George Thomas
Today we continue to welcome the new players on to the Somerset Academy.
Our focus for this piece is George Thomas.
George, who is 16, is joining the Somerset Academy after spending three years on the Emerging Player Programme.
The all rounder, who attends King’s College and plays his club cricket for Taunton St Andrews, said: “I feel very privileged to be able to join the Somerset Academy and I’m very happy and proud of what I’ve achieved so far. I’ve been involved with the Somerset Emerging Player Programme for three years and this has helped me a lot with the technical side of my game.”
Reflecting on his career to date, George said: “The trip to Sri Lanka with the Somerset Under 15s earlier this year was one of the highlights and it was an unbelievable experience. We had to adapt to playing in very different conditions and we played against a lot of spin bowlers out there, which was very good for me.
“This summer I went off to Bunbury where I was part of the South West team that achieved five wins out of five, which made it a great week. It was very hard work, but it was a good week and really enjoyable. It was really great to get away with the squad, and to bond with team-mates who I normally face as opponents was good for me.”
During this summer George made his First XI debut for Taunton St Andrews in the Premier One of the WEPL about which he said: “It was very challenging, and it was a lot harder environment to play in because there is a lot more chat and the bowling was a lot stronger.”
Looking ahead, George said: “Hopefully I can continue to enjoy my cricket and do the best I can. I really hope to walk out onto the Cooper Associates County Ground playing for Somerset one day.”
Academy Director, Steve Snell said: “George is an exciting all round cricketer and I have been particularly impressed with his fielding every time I’ve seen him play. His inventiveness and stroke play in one-day cricket is exciting and he scored a magnificent hundred against Cornwall in a T20 game earlier this year. George also made some significant contributions this season for Somerset Under 15s with his innings against Surry in the ECB U15 quarter-final certainly a highlight.”Back to News
