Mixed weekend for Somerset Women

Somerset’s women enjoyed a mixed day at Taunton Deane C.C. last Sunday as they beat Cheshire but were defeated by Hampshire.

In the first match, Cheshire won the toss and decided to bat but runs were hard to come by against the tight attack of Cassie Coombes and Georgia Tulip. None of the batters really settled and once Nicole Richards and Megan Hodkinson removed Coppack and Prestidge, Cheshire were 58 for four.

The introduction of Jackie Hawker saw the innings effectively fall apart. Bowling full and straight Hawker returned Somerset’s best Women’s T20 figures of five wickets for just six runs as Cheshire were all out for just 79.

Although Georgina Adcock fell for seven with the score on 18, in truth the Somerset reply was untroubled. Sophie Luff (21 not out) for once almost played second string as Olivia Hamilton continued her T20 form from the previous week with a dominant 44 not out as Somerset completed a nine wicket win in less than 12 overs.

After Cheshire had endured a second loss of the day against Hampshire in the middle fixture, Somerset Captain Luff won the toss and decided to bat first in the last of the triple-header games against a strong Hampshire team.

Adcock started brightly, with several boundaries and a six in her 25, while several of the home side got starts but failed to go on make a telling contribution. Eventually Hawker and Lauren Filer took the score to 114 all out.

Coombes again earned an early dismissal, but Dean settled into an anchoring role, rotating the strike and allowing the others to play their shots around her. Somerset toiled to take the game deep with an additional wicket each for Hawker and Lorraine Szczepanski, plus a run out for Luff, but Hampshire ran out eventual winners by six wickets with ten balls to spare.

The team go again at Usk C.C. this weekend with a pair of games which will have crucial importance to their promotional aspirations against unbeaten Wales and also Scotland.
