New CEO outlines vision
Somerset’s new Chief Executive, Lee Cooper has spent his first days at the Cooper Associates County Ground and the new man at the helm has made it quite clear what his priorities are for the county.
“Simply, my vision is to compete for and win trophies,” he said. “It’s enormously important that we challenge in all formats and we will start every season with the objective of winning all three competitions, and no one format will take precedence.”
Lee, who was born and grew up in Taunton, was a highly talented batsman himself and had dreams of a career as a professional cricketer for Somerset. He played through the County age groups and captained the Under 19s to the ECB National Cup. He also played for the Second XI and Taunton CC, but sadly never quite made it to the top level.
However, the new CEO does have a good understanding of the game and expanded on how he would go about achieving his goal. “Our policy is to identify, develop and back local talent and the core of any Somerset side will consist of this,” he said. “However, in order to compete and help develop this local talent, it is necessary to compliment it with high quality players.
“Somerset CCC is a cricket club, and the objective is to win trophies and deliver a high value product for our supporters. Naturally, the commercial success of the cricket club is important, but it’s not as important as the cricket.”
In a message to all Somerset supporters the local businessman, who has enjoyed considerable success in the financial world prior to taking up his new role, said: “It’s an honour and a privilege to be the CEO of Somerset County Cricket Club. I will undertake the role with a passion that burns from primarily being a supporter. Together we will achieve great things over the years to come.”Back to News
