Overseas Update

It’s been another busy few days for Somerset’s players who are plying their trade overseas this winter.

In addition to Jack Leach’s match winning performance for England in Sri Lanka, Club Captain Tom Abell only flew out to Perth last week, but at the weekend he was in top form with the ball for Fremantle CC where he is playing Grade Cricket.

Tom recorded impressive figures of three wickets for 14 runs, which included the top two Mount Lawley batsmen, from his 11 overs as  Fremantle bowled out their opponents for 104.

In reply Fremantle made 108 for two declared, with Tom unbeaten on nine. When Mount Lawley batted for a second time they were reduced to 48 for four, with the Somerset skipper claiming one wicket for four runs from his four overs. The game continues next weekend.

Dom Bess and Jamie Overton are currently impressing for the England Lions in their four-day match against Pakistan A in Abu Dhabi.

After winning the toss the Lions elected to bat and Dom contributed 42 to the England total of 240 all out. Sam Billings top scored with 74 not out.

In reply Pakistan A were all out for 195. Dom claimed two for 62 from his 11 overs whilst Jamie took one for 23 from nine overs and also took two catches.

Western Storm’s Anya Shrubsole took a hat-trick as England beat South Africa by seven wickets to book their place in the last four of the ICC Women’s World T20. The Somerset bowler claimed three for 11 from 3.3 overs as England eased past their opponents. She also claimed three for 10 and scored 29 as England were narrowly edged out by the West Indies in their final group match.

Smriti Mandhana was also in impressive form in the tournament at the weekend. The India opener, who impressed with Western Storm in 2019, smashed a career-best 83 from 55 balls to help India record a memorable win over tournament favourites Australia.

Elsewhere, Azhar Ali made 65 in Pakistan’s second innings in the first Test against New Zealand in Abu Dhabi. Unfortunately for Pakistan it wasn’t enough to see them come out on top as New Zealand won a dramatic match by just four runs.

Finally, Roelof van der Merwe has arrived in Sharjah in the UAE to play in the 2018 T10.

The Somerset all-rounder will be lining up for the Maratha Arabians in the competition which gets underway on November 23rd. As you can see he’s been getting some last minute advice from a famous face!
