Pre-season Combined National Counties Match Cancelled
Somerset County Cricket Club have taken the decision to cancel a proposed pre-season fixture against a team made up of players from our neighbouring National Counties due to the current restrictions that are in place due to Covid-19.
Somerset Director of Cricket, Andy Hurry explains.
“We’ve been working collaboratively behind the scenes with our National Counties partners and with Neil Gamble at Devon in order to facilitate a two-day pre-season red-ball game against a combined National Counties XI made up of players from Devon, Cornwall and Dorset. It would have been a really positive affirmation of how our relationship with our National County partners has evolved over recent years. It would also have been a great opportunity for us to kickstart our competitive build up to the start of the season and would have given National County players the chance to pitch their skills against First Class players at the Cooper Associates County Ground.
“Unfortunately, given the landscape that we currently find ourselves in with regards to Covid-19, we are not in a position to facilitate this fixture as we had hoped. Therefore, it is with a heavy heart that we have had to cancel this fixture.
“However, the amount of work that has been undertaken in planning this match and the enthusiasm which has been displayed by the National Counties demonstrates that this potential fixture is something that should certainly be on our radar in future years.
“We are currently exploring a replacement fixture that adheres to ECB stage three guidance and will of course share any updates in due course.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the National Counties players and staff whose commitment to the fixture was really appreciated.”
Neil Gamble, Chairman of Devon County Cricket Club, who was organising the National Counties team, said: “Cornwall, Devon and Dorset were delighted to be invited to raise a combined team to play Somerset in a special pre-season two-day fixture on 18-19th March. It was therefore a great disappointment when it was subsequently learnt that coronavirus restrictions will prevent the game going ahead.
“It is to be hoped that this excellent initiative by Andy Hurry may be revived at the same time next year in the interests of playing some competitive cricket, and to extend good relations between three National Counties and a very well regarded First Class neighbour.”
Paul Pritchard, Head Coach of Dorset County Cricket Club, was due to coach the combined National Counties side. “The Players and myself would like to thank Andy Hurry and Somerset CCC for their forward thinking in proposing the pre-season friendly between Somerset CCC and a combined Devon, Dorset and Cornwall XI,” he said. “Understandably, the fixture has had to be cancelled due to Covid regulations. We were very much looking forward to the two days at Taunton and hope the fixture will be considered for 2022 and beyond.”Back to News
