Rachel's art on display in the Stragglers

Anyone who has visited the Stragglers Coffee House recently will have seen an impressive array of stunning artwork adorning the walls.

Each piece has been created by a familiar face to any Stragglers regular.

Rachel Gliddon, the Stragglers Supervisor, is also a talented artist and all the new artwork is hers.

“We wanted to make the Stragglers a more inviting place,” she said when we spoke to her recently. “One of the ideas that we came up with was to put some artwork on the walls. Sam Safe (SCCC Catering General Manager) knew that I love to create art in my spare time and she asked if I wanted to display some of my work here.

“My work varies quite a lot and I use anything from Indian ink and different types of pen to a sewing machine or watercolours.

“The pictures that are on display here are mainly of wildlife because I love to draw things that I find aesthetically pleasing. There are a lot of birds on display because I like their movement and the energy that they have. I really like to try and transfer that energy on to the canvas or paper.”

“I’ve always spent a lot of time drawing even when I was at school,” she continued. “After school I went to college and took Fine Art and then I did a foundation degree before doing Drawing & Applied Arts at UWE in Bristol.”

It’s not the first time that Rachel has had her work viewed by the public as she explained: “I took part in the Taunton Dragon Trail a few years ago. The dragon that I painted was in Wellington and was called Camo.”

Rachel always seems to be working in the Stragglers, so where does she find the time to indulge her passion for art?

“I draw most evenings,” she said. “Although I work a lot of hours I try to draw as often as I can. The real enjoyment comes from creating something on the page. It’s about preparing an idea, putting it down on a piece of paper and having something good at the end of it.”

You can now see Rachel’s artwork in the Stragglers Coffee House which is open from 8am to 4pm Monday to Saturday and 8:30am to 2:30pm on Sundays.
