Roelof selected for T10 Cricket League
Roelof van der Merwe is one of those players who have been selected to take part in the TCL T10 Cricket League later this year.
Some of the biggest names in the game including Shahid Afridi, Kumar Sangakkara, Virender Sehwag, Shoaib Malik and Eoin Morgan will feature in this new competition which will see six sides battle it out in a tournament which will be played in Sharjah Cricket Stadium, UAE between December 14th and 17th.
The squads were selected via an auction and Roelof is delighted to be involved. “I put my name forward for the draft system and I was lucky enough to get picked,” he said. “It looks like it’s going to be a really exciting and fast competition. There certainly won’t be too much hanging around in the field!
“Dubai is an awesome place to play cricket and it’s going to be interesting to see how the format works and what the scores are going to be.”
Roelof will be lining up for Maratha Arabians who will be captained by Virender Sehwag. Their squad also features Kumar Sangakkara, Mohammed Amir, Alex Hales, Wayne Parnell, Rilee Roussouw, and Kamran Akmal.
“It’s going to be awesome to play with those guys,” he said. “There are some big names playing for all the teams in the competition and there are definitely some big hitters involved.
“It’s going to be tough as a bowler over there, trying to get ten wickets in ten overs. The batters will be trying to blaze from the very start so it’s going to be tough with the ball. There will be a lot of pressure on the bowlers but it should be good. The entertainment value for the supporters and the crowds is going to be extremely high.”
Regarding Roelof’s selection, Somerset Head Coach Jason Kerr said: “This is a great opportunity for him and playing alongside players of that calibre can only be of benefit. Roelof has proved himself to be one of the most dynamic limited overs players on the county scene over the last two years and thoroughly deserves this chance. We wish him all the very best.”
