Head to Head

The last game between the two sides in the 50 over or more format was at Trent Bridge back in July 1998 when the competition was 60 overs per side.

After winning the toss and opting to bat first Somerset made 255 for nine from their allotted overs. Richard Harden was the top scorer on that day with 61, while captain Peter Bowler made 43 and Keith Parsons 42. Marcus Trescothick batted at number seven in the match and made 22.

The pick of the home bowlers was Paul Franks who claimed three for 40 from his nine overs, one of which was a maiden.

When the hosts replied they looked in trouble at 171 for six, but recovered to reach 256 for nine off the third ball of the final over, thanks to Chris Tolley who hit 77, Jason Gallian with 50 and Paul Strang who made 40.

The pick of the Somerset bowlers was Andy Caddick who took four for 63 off his 12 overs, two of which were maidens and Trescothick who came on as first change and took two for 49 off his nine, one of which was a maiden.

Views from the Dressing Room

Somerset captain Jim Allenby said: “This is a huge game and looks like it will be a pretty high quality one. There’s two really good and evenly matched sides and from what I’ve seen they both have a similar game plan. Both sides have lots of attacking bowlers and some guys who can clear the ropes with the bat, so it promises to be a high quality contest.

“I can’t wait for it because it’s been a while since the washout at Lord’s to finish the group stage and I know the boys are all excited. Notts will have Stuart Broad and James Pattinson so we can expect them to have a really good seam bowling attack. We know how good their batting is, even though they’ll be without Alex Hales, so they are going to be a tough side to play against without a doubt.

“It will be a good test and if you want to win the competition you have got to beat sides like this at some point, so if we beat Notts in the quarter-final then I can’t see any reason why we cant go the whole way. They’re one of the best sides in the comp, so it’s a shame to have to play them in the quarter-final, but you have to beat the best at some point so you might as well get it out of the way on Tuesday!”
