Royal London One-Day Cup Preview: Somerset v Sussex Sharks

THE MATCH

Somerset will be looking to maintain our 100% start to the 2018 Royal London One-Day Cup when we welcome Sussex Sharks to the Cooper Associates County Ground tomorrow (Tuesday).

Gates will open at 10am with play due to start at 11am.

Somerset are currently top of the South Group after winning both of our matches in the competition whilst Sussex Sharks are in third place with one win and one defeat from their opening two fixtures.

HEAD TO HEAD

In List A cricket the two sides have met on 63 occasions. Somerset have won 30, Sussex have won 32 and one match ended in a tie.

When the two sides met in Taunton in July 2016 Somerset made 237 all out in 48.1 overs after choosing to bat first. The highlight of the innings was a maiden List A century from Tom Abell, whilst Jofra Archer took five for 42 for the visitors. In reply, Sussex slumped to 95 for seven before they rallied to reach 227 for nine from their 50 overs to give Somerset the win by 10 runs. Tim Groenewald was the pick of the bowlers, taking three for 30.

When the two sides met at Taunton in April last season, Somerset posted 303 for five off 49 overs, which included an unbeaten 130 from Dean Elgar. In reply, chasing a revised target following a rain intervention, Sussex reached 155 for nine off 20 overs to give Somerset victory by nine runs (D/L method).

Somerset are still without Jack Leach (thumb) and Dom Bess (England duty) but Matt Renshaw has been recalled.

Ben Brown, Danny Briggs, Michael Burgess, Laurie Evans, Harry Finch, George Garton, Delray Rawlins, Ollie Robinson, Abi Sakande, Phil Salt, Ishant Sharma, Luke Wells, David Wiese, Luke Wright.

VIEWS FROM THE DRESSING ROOM

Ahead of the match Somerset Head Coach, Jason Kerr said: ‘’The lads have started this competition brilliantly. There’s a lot of confidence in the group at the moment and we’re excited for the match against Sussex.

“There’s a  lot of people contributing to team wins and for us to be successful over a long period of time that’s what you need to do.”

Jason is also looking forward to playing in front of another large crowd at the Cooper Associates County Ground. “I keep reinforcing to the squad that we’re incredibly blessed,’’ he said. “We’re so fortunate in the way that we’re supported. There were around 3500 people here on Sunday and regardless of how well we’re playing, they’re one  hundred percent behind us. It really is like having an extra player out there”.

This match will also be our Schools Day which will see over 1000 children from 30 schools attending the match free of charge. Regarding this initiative Jason said: “Part of our role as a professional sports club is to inspire the next generation and I hope that everyone enjoys the day.”

SCHOOLS DAY

This match will see our sixth annual Schools Day take place.

This year were are delighted to be welcoming over 1000 pupils from 30 schools from across the region.

All pupils will receive an activity booklet when they arrive at the Cooper Associates County Ground which consists of a treasure hunt and some simple games.

Cricket based activities will be taking place in the Indoor Centre of Excellence throughout the day and our inflatable cricket nets will also be in place outside the Somerset Cricket Museum.

During the interval all schools will take part in a parade around the outfield.

KIDS ACTIVITY ZONE

Our Kids Activation Zone will be set up in front of the Cricket Museum.
