Second XI Championship: Glamorgan v Somerset

Somerset Second XI are in Championship action against their Glamorgan counterparts at Abergavenny CC.

Somerset won the toss and elected to bat.



Somerset resumed on 259 for three in their second innings, leading by 44 runs.

Xavi Clarke eventually fell for a fine 114 and Will Smale made 53, but Somerset were all out for 337, a lead of 122.

By the lunch interval, the hosts were 19 for one. That soon became 19 for two when Joe Cooke fell to the second ball of the afternoon session, and when Callum Nicholls became Ned Leonard’s second victim of the day, Glamorgan were 23 for three.

However, Callum Taylor and Thomas Bevan shared a stand of 56 for the fourth wicket, before Taylor and Dan Douthwaite saw the hosts to their target to win by six wickets.


Glamorgan resumed on 428 for six on day three.

30 runs had been added when Callum Nicholls was trapped lbw by Ned Leonard for 36.

The hosts were eventually all out for 529, a lead of 215.

By tea, Somerset had reached 136 for two after slipping to 23 from two in the ninth over, curtesy of a hundred partnership between George Bartlett and Xavi Clarke.

The pair eventually shared a stand of 208.

Bartlett fell for 118, but at the close of play Clarke was still there on 100 not out as Somerset finished on 259 for three.


Glamorgan resumed on seven without loss and had advanced the score to 24 when Harry Friend was caught by George Bartlett off the bowling of Ned Leonard for 13.

Jack Harding trapped Alex Horton lbw for 21 at 60 for two, but the hosts had advanced to 125 for two by lunch.

Leonard claimed his second wicket when he removed Joe Cooke for 61 at 130 for three. Callum Taylor and Thomas Bevan then shared a fourth wicket stand of 128 to take the hosts to 258 until Taylor fell for 73.

By tea Glamorgan were 283 for four.

Bevan went on to make 122 before being trapped lbw by Jack Harding. Dan Douthwaite made 72 and by the close of play, Glamorgan had reached 428 for six, a lead of 114.


Somerset slipped to two for two, but Andy Umeed and Xavi Clarke shared a third wicket stand of 72 to get the visitors back on track.

Clarke fell for 36 but by the time the lunch interval arrived, Somerset were 117 for three.

Andy Umeed and Will Smale continued to impress and by tea the pair had taken their fourth wicket stand to 152 and Somerset went in at 226 for three.

The hosts fought back after the break and Smale was removed for 74 at 244 for four and Umeed was dismissed in the next over for an excellent 125 without further addition to the score.

Jay Terry and George Barlow then both fell with the score on 275 and when Ned Leonard departed the visitors were 284 for eight.

Ollie Sale and Max Horton brought up the Somerset 300 off the last ball of the 88th over. The visitors were eventually all out for 314.

By the close of play, Glamorgan had reached seven without loss.
