Second XI Championship: Eddie inspires Somerset to derby victory


Somerset wrapped up a dramatic victory in this Second XI Championship match against Gloucestershire at Rockhampton CC thanks in no small part to a second century of the match for Eddie Byrom.

On the final day Gloucestershire resumed on 139 for five, a lead of 213.

However, the hosts were bowled out for 212. Ollie Sale was the pick of the bowlers, claiming four for 48.

Needing 287 for victory Somerset made a solid start with openers Marcus Trescothick and Byrom taking the visitors to 35 without loss at lunch.

The Somerset pair continued to eat away at the deficit and Trescothick went to his 50 from 63 balls. The century partnership was reached from 142 balls before Byrom also reached his 50 from 75 balls.

After 30 overs Somerset had reached 144 without loss, still requiring 143 runs for victory.

Trescothick eventually fell for 90 with the score on 164 but Byrom reached his second century of the match from 130 balls.

Byrom (137 not out) and Ben Green (56 not out) saw Somerset over the line to an impressive victory by nine wickets.

Somerset resumed on 92 without loss on day two of this three-day Second XI Championship match against Gloucestershire at Rockhampton CC.

Somerset openers Marcus Trescothick and Eddie Byrom completed their 100 run partnership early in the morning session but the former England man was the first wicket to fall when he was dismissed for 53 with the score on 114.

Byrom and Ben Green then added 40 for the second wicket before Green was out for 10. Byrom reached his 100 from 119 balls but was eventually dismissed for 104.

By the time the lunch interval arrived Somerset had reached 236 for three.

Tom Lammonby (31), Tim Rouse (46) and Lewis Goldsworthy (35) all made good contributions and the visitors eventually declared on 320 for six.

By the close of play, two wickets from Ollie Sale had helped to ensure that Gloucestershire finished on 139 for five, a lead of 213 which sets things up beautifully for the final day tomorrow.


Somerset Second XI are in Championship action in a three-day match against Gloucestershire at Rockhampton.

The hosts won the toss and elected to bat, but slipped to 18 for two in the sixth over.

Greg Willows was run out by Ben Green for eight with the score on 14 and then George Hankins was bowled by Nathan Gilchrist for 0.

Jack Taylor and Ben Charlesworth added 93 for the third wicket but their partnership was ended by Gilchrist when he had Taylor caught by Charley Reed for 64.

Gilchrist claimed two more wickets before lunch and at the break Gloucestershire were 152 for five.

Once play resumed eleven runs had been added to the total when Paul van Meekeren claimed the scalp of George Drissell.

Charlesworth and Matt Brewer added 73 before the latter was trapped lbw by Lewis Goldsworthy for 46.

Before tea, Charlesworth went to his century off 182 balls but Kasey Aldridge removed Hankins as the hosts reached 321 for eight at tea.

The hosts were eventually all out for 394 with Charlesworth unbeaten on 144.

In reply, Somerset openers Marcus Trescothick (42 not out) and Eddie Byrom (44 not out) easily negotiated the final 18 overs of the day as the visitors finished on 92 without loss.
