Second XI Championship: Middlesex v Somerset - Day Three



Somerset began their second innings when play got underway in this Second XI County Championship match against Middlesex at Radlett Cricket Club.

Somerset were set a total of 310 for victory.

Opening batsmen Ben Green and Chris Gibson made a solid start and put on 87 for the first wicket. Green was the man to go for 52 when he was trapped lbw by Nathan Sowter.

By the time the lunch interval arrived, Somerset had reached 90 for one, requiring a further 220 runs.

After the break, the score had advanced to 136 when Gibson was removed for 62. Will Smeed and Sam Young then fell in quick succession to leave the visitors on 142 for four.

Ben Wells and James Rew took Somerset to 180 but the former was trapped lbw by Nathan Sowter for 26. By the time the players left the field for tea, Somerset were 187 for five, requiring a further 123 runs for victory.

Rew and Kasey Aldridge shared a 61-run partnership for the sixth wicket, but Rew fell for 43 at 241 for six. Aldridge went on to make 56 but Somerset lost their last three wickets for 18 runs as they fell agonizingly short of their required total.

Middesex won the match by just 11 runs.

Somerset Second XI Coach, Greg Kennis has named the following squad for the match: Ben Green, Chris Gibson, Sam Young, Will Smeed, Ben Wells, James Rew, Sam Elstone, George Drissell, Ned Leonard, Jack Brooks, Alfie Ogborne and Ari Karvelas.


Somerset resumed on 57 for four on day two of this Second XI County Championship match against Middlesex at Radlett Cricket Club.

Somerset lost two early wickets and by the time the players left the field for rain at 11:42 the score had advanced to 81 for six, with Somerset trailing by 142 runs with four first innings wickets remaining.

Play resumed shortly after 12pm but Somerset were all out for 102 just before 12:50pm. Ben Wells top scored with 28, whilst Steven Finn was the pick of the bowlers with four for 31.

By lunch the hosts had reached two without loss, a lead of 123 runs.

Somerset fought back well in the afternoon session and Ari Karvelas removed both Josh de Caires and Stephen Eskinazi in the 16th over. By the time the tea interval arrived, the hosts were 83 for four.

Despite 71 from Jack Davies, the host batsmen were restricted by some accurate Somerset bowling and were eventually all out for 188.

Karvelas, Alfie Ogborne and Ben Green each claimed three wickets apiece.

Somerset will begin their second innings tomorrow morning requiring 310 runs for victory.

The visitors made an early breakthrough when Josh de Caires was bowled by Ben Green for 17 in the 10th over with 32 runs on the board.

Ari Karvelas claimed two wickets before lunch and by the time the interval arrived, Middlesex were 97 for three.

A short rain delay delayed the resumption of play, but Somerset wrapped up the Middlesex first innings just before 4:30pm, resulting in the advent of the tea break.

The visitors were all out for 223. Stephen Eskinazi top scored with 79 whilst Karvelas was the pick of the bowlers, claiming five for 41. Ben Green also caught the eye by taking three for 33.

By the close of play, Somerset had reached 57 for four, trailing by 166 runs with six first innings wickets remaining.
