Second XI Championship: Somerset v Essex - Somerset win

DAY THREE

Overnight Essex declared on that total and Somerset forfeited their 1st innings, giving them 3 points apiece. Essex then made 50-1 in 7.1 overs and declared leaving Somerset 333 to win from a minimum of 86 overs at around 4 runs an over.

The first pair of Tresothick and Byrom put on 83 for the 1st wicket when Trescothick was out on the ball immediately prior to lunch. Byrom went on to make 100 from 156 balls with a few wickets falling about him, but 2 balls later was out LBW on exactly 100.

It was at that point that Jack Leach came in and it was his stabilising influence which enabled the home team to 198-6 at tea. By the time the last hour started Somerset were 267-8, needing 66 from a minimum of 16 overs but only 2 wickets with which to play.

A 50 partnership between Jack Leach and Will Williams enabled the home team to reach 318-8 and indeed continued to 330 when Leach was out to a simple catch when he had made a very well crafted 82, to see Somerset nearly over the line.

At this point all that was needed were 3 runs from the final 12 balls. The first of these two overs went for just one run. The position by this time was really tense as still any of the 4 results was possible.

The final over began with dot, dot, and all the players were beginning to pace. Suddenly, the 3rd ball was cracked to the boundary for 4 by Williams and the game was over, Somerset winning by 1 wicket with 3 balls to spare. 19 points to Somerset – 3 to Essex.

By lunch Essex were on top and had reached 106 for one. Kishen Velani was the man to fall when he was trapped lbw by Josh Davey for six with the score on 26.

Davey struck again to make it 125 for two when Marcus Trescothick caught Nick Brown. Trescothick was in the action again shortly after when his safe hands accounted for Callum Tylor (64) off the bowling of Jack Leach with Essex on 146 for three.

That became 147 for four when Trescothick again pouched a chance to remove Rahul Sheemar off Peter Trego.

There were two further wickets for Leach and one more for Davey whilst Will Pereira also claimed one as the visitors finished the day on 268 for eight.
