Second XI Championship: Somerset v Nottinghamshire



Somerset wrapped up a 50 run win over Nottinghamshire on the final day of this Second XI Championship match at Taunton Vale Sports Club.

Nottinghamshire resumed on 14 for one, requiring a further 286 runs for victory.

Ollie Sale claimed two wickets and there was one each for Marchant de Lange and Ned Leonard as Somerset reduced Notts to 90 for five at lunch, with the visitors still requiring 210 for victory.

By the tea interval, Nottinghamshire were 179 for eight, needing 121 to win.

After tea, the visitors continued to frustrate Somerset, but Ned Leonard eventually broke Nottinghamshire hearts when he claimed the final wicket to dismiss the visitors for 249.

Somerset began their second innings leading by 43 runs when play got underway on day three of this 2nd XI County Championship match against Nottinghamshire at Taunton Vale Sports Club this morning.

Opening pair Ben Green and Dylan Church took the score to 42 before the latter fell for 26. By lunch, Somerset had reached 99 for one, a lead of 142.

During the afternoon session Lewis Goldsworthy reached his 50 from 105 balls and by tea Somerset were 197 for five.

After the break, Somerset were all out for 256 and by the close of play Nottinghamshire were 14 for one, requiring a further 286 runs for victory.


Somerset resumed on 326 for eight on day two of this Second XI Championship match against Nottinghamshire at Taunton Vale Sports Club.

Ollie Sale was bowled by Calvin Harrison without further addition to the overnight total, and when Adam Small was removed for 12 Somerset were all out for 342. Both teams secured three bonus points.

Notts openers Matt Montgomery and Sol Budinger had added 71 when the Notts skipper was bowled by Ollie Sale for 22. Budinger was then caught behind by Small off Ned Leonard for 43 without any addition to the score. By lunch, the visitors were 81 for two.

After the interval, Harrison was caught behind off Ben Green for six at 92 for three. Then, with the score on 105, Notts lost two further wickets as Sam King (12) was caught by George Bartlett off Marchant de Lange, and Dane Schadendorf was bowled by Green. At tea the visitors were 201 for five, trailing by 141.

By the close of play, Notts were all out for 299, trailing by 43 runs. Marchant de Lange was the pick of the bowlers, claiming five for 68 from 20.4 overs.


Nottinghamshire won the toss and elected to bowl.

Openers Dylan Church and Ben Green fell early as Somerset slipped to seven for two. However, Lewis Goldsworthy and George Bartlett took their side to 41 before the former fell for 27. Bartlett was then trapped lbw by Toby Pettman for 24 which resulted in lunch being taken with Somerset on 66 for four.

After the break, Will Smeed was bowled by Jake Ball for 33 at 101 for five, but then Roelof van der Merwe and Kasey Aldridge shared a century stand and took Somerset to tea on 222 for five.

The sixth wicket partnership was eventually worth 160 before Aldridge fell for 80 at 261 for six. Van der Merwe went on to make 115 from 173 balls before he was dismissed at 308 for eight.

Ollie Sale (27*) and Adam Small (4*) ensured that Somerset reached the end of the opening day on 326 for eight.
