Second XI Championship: Somerset v Sussex – Day Four

Sussex came out on top by nine wickets in this Second XI County Championship match at Taunton Vale Sports Club.

DAY FOUR

Somerset resumed on 33 without loss in their second innings when play got underway on the final day of this Second XI Championship match at Taunton Vale Sports Club.

Andy Umeed and Archie Vaughan had taken the score to 83 when the younger man was dismissed for 27.

83 for one soon became 90 for four as Lewis Goldsworthy, George Bartlett and Umeed all fell in quick succession. George and Josh Thomas took Somerset to three-figures but the latter became Jamie Atkins’ fourth victim of the morning.

Danial Ibrahim then removed Fin Hill and Thomas Rew with successive deliveries, and when George Thomas was dismissed in the final over before lunch Somerst were 154 for eight, leading by 60 runs.

Somerset were eventually dismissed for 192, setting Sussex a victory target of 99. Atkins was the pick of the visiting attack, finishing with five for 41 from 11.4 overs.

Sussex reached their target for the loss of just one wicket inside 14 overs.

DAY THREE

Sussex resumed on 64 without loss when play began on the third day of this Second XI Championship match at Taunton Vale Sports Club.

The opening pair of Harrison Ward and Tom Haines shared a stand of 184 before the former fell for 95. By the time the lunch interval arrived, the visitors were 214 for one, trailing by 121 runs with nine first innings wickets remaining.

Haines fell for 97 after the break at 220 for two, and when JT Langridge claimed two wickets in as many balls Sussex were on 233 for four.

Zach Lion-Cachet and Charlie Tear then shared a 76-run partnership for the fifth wicket before the latter was dismissed for 31. By the time the tea interval arrived the score was 317 for five.

Lion-Cachet reached his 100 from 195 balls and remained unbeaten on 102 as Sussex declared on 429 for six, a lead of 94.

By the close of play, Somerset had reached 33 without loss, trailing by 61 runs.

DAY TWO

Only six balls were possible at the beginning of the day due to rain. During that time, Sussex added three runs to their overnight total.

When play did eventually get back underway, the visitors moved to 64 without loss at lunch.

Unfortunately, no further play was possible due to further rain throughout the afternoon.

DAY ONE

Sussex won the toss and elected to bowl.

The hosts lost Andy Umeed with no score on the board to the final ball of the opening over, but Archie Vaughan and Lewis Goldsworthy took Somerset to 49 before the latter was caught behind off Sean Hunt for 12.

By the time a second rain break brought forth an early lunch, Somerset were 49 for two.

After the interval, Vaughan went to his half century from 76 balls, but he fell for the addition of just one further run to his personal total at 97 for three.

George Bartlett and George Thomas then shared a fourth wicket stand of 114 to take Somerset to 211. Bartlett was the man to fall for an excellent 82 from 86 balls.

A further shower sent the players scurrying for the shelter of the pavilion, and with it tea, at 3:45pm with the scoreboard showing 215 for four.

After the break, that soon became 223 for six as the Thomas brothers, George (48) and Josh (4), fell in consecutive overs.

A 69-run 10th wicket partnership between Alfie Ogborne and Shoaib Bashir after Ned Leonard had retired not out on nine took Somerset to 355 for eight when the declaration came. Jamie Atkins was the pick of the visiting bowlers, claiming three for 76.

By the time bad light brought a halt to proceedings for the day, the visitors had reached eight without loss.
