Second XI Championship: Surrey v Somerset - Match Drawn
Somerset Second XI were due to finish a three-day Championship match against Surrey at LSE, New Malden today (Wednesday).
Unfortunately rain meant that no play was possible on the final day and the match ended as a draw.
Somerset Second XI Coach, Greg Kennis has named the following squad for the match: George Bartlett (c), Ben Green, Steve Davies, Sam Young, Ben Wells, Charley Reed, Tom Keast, Josh Davey, Steve Croft, Jack Brooks, Nathan Gilchrist and Julius Sumerauer.
In the morning session, Surrey extended their first innings total to 313 after Conor McKerr frustrated Somerset with an unbeaten 89. Jack Brooks ended with 4/65 after picking up the final three wickets in the innings, all bowled.
The Somerset innings started well with Ben Green and Sam Young posting an opening partnership of 46 before Green was caught at second slip for 13.
The standout performance came from Sam Young, who played the Surrey bowling attack well and looked particularly accomplished against Morne Morkel. He scored 88 before being caught and bowled by Scott Borthwick. His innings occupied 129 balls and included 14 boundaries.
By the end of the day Somerset had moved to 256 for nine with Josh Davey unbeaten on 54.
Somerset won the toss and elected to bowl.
Josh Davey made an early breakthrough for the visitors when he trapped Nick Welch lbw for two with the score on 11.
Scott Borthwick and Usman Khan then shared a second wicket partnership of 99 before the latter was caught by Davey off the bowling of Steve Croft for 50. Croft then removed Zen Malik for 17 and by the time the lunch interval arrived the hosts were 140 for three.
Rain and bad light then delayed the restart before further rain saw the players return to the pavilion at 165 for three.
When play eventually resumed Borthwick was trapped lbw by Jack Brooks for 81.
By the close of play the hosts had reached 229 for seven.Back to News
