Second XI Championship: Somerset beat Surrey
Somerset welcome Surrey to Taunton Vale Sports Club in the Second XI Championship this week.
Play was due to get underway at 11am on Monday, but heavy overnight rain meant that no play was possible on day one.
Surrey won the toss and elected to bowl first.
67 from Eddie Byrom and 44 from Noah Davis helped the home side to post a total of 256 for nine declared.
By the close of play the visitors had been reduced to 20 for two courtesy of a brace for Ned Leonard.
In the morning session, the Somerset bowlers dominated the Surrey batsmen and by lunch the visitors were 83 for eight. George Barlow caught the eye, claiming three for nine by the interval.
The afternoon session saw the home bowlers make short work of the Surrey tail, and the visitors were all out for 96. Barlow finished with three for nine whilst Ned Leonard also took three wickets.
Batting for a second time, Somerset had reached 226 for five by the close of play, a lead of 386.
Eddie Byrom was the pick of the Somerset batsmen, making 107.
Somerset declared overnight and therefore Surrey require 387 for victory.
By lunch, the visitors had reached 113 for two, still requiring 274 runs.
After the break, the Somerset bowlers turned the screw and by the time the tea interval had arrived Surrey were 192 for seven.
The visitors dug deep and took the game to the wire, but Somerset eventually came out on top as Surrey were dismissed for 301 to give the hosts the win by 85 runs. Sonny Baker was the pick of the bowlers, claiming three for 49
