Second XI Championship: Warwickshire v Somerset

Warwickshire resumed on 88 for six on the final morning of this Second XI Championship match at Edgbaston Community Sports Ground.

Shoaib Bashir claimed three for 14 as the hosts were dismissed for 174 as Somerset secured a comprehensive win by 490 runs.

DAY THREE

Warwickshire resumed on 56 for five on the third day of this Second XI Championship match at Edgbaston Community Sports Ground.

However, Alfie Ogborne (three for three) and Ned Leonard (three for 32) made short work of the Warwickshire tail as the hosts were dismissed for just 64.

Somerset’s second innings suffered an early setback when Andy Umeed was dismissed off the opening ball, but Steve Davies and George Bartlett posted a century stand to take the visitors to 114 for one at lunch.

After the interval, the Somerset pair took their partnership past the 200-mark. Their stand was worth 238 when Davies was dismissed for 140. Bartlett and Tom Banton then shared a half century partnership as Somerset reached tea with the scoreboard showing 296 for three.

After the break, Bartlett eventually fell for an impressive 130 at 323 for four. Banton (71*) and Ben Green (33*) took the score to 386 when the declaration came.

Ned Leonard claimed four second innings wickets as the hosts finished the day on 88 for six, requiring an unlikely 577 runs for victory.

DAY TWO

Play finally got underway at 11am on day two of this Second XI County Championship match between Warwickshire and Somerset at Edgbaston Community Sports Ground.

Warwickshire won the toss and elected to field.

Two early wickets for Henry Brookes saw Somerset slip to 28 for two, but a 58-run partnership between Andy Umeed and Lewis Goldsworthy got the visitors back on track. The score had advanced to 86 when Goldsworthy (29) became Brookes’ third victim.

Umeed reached his 50 from 82 balls but when he fell just three balls later without further addition to his score Somerset were 104 for five. By lunch, the visitors were 118 without further loss.

Roelof van der Merwe fell to the first ball after the break but Ben Green and George Thomas shared a century stand for the seventh wicket. The hundred partnership was brought up from just 110 balls.

The partnership was worth 102 when Thomas was dismissed for a run a ball 56 at 220 for seven.

When tea arrived, Somerset were 278 for seven with Green not out on 74 and Ned Leonard not out on 23.

The Somerset Captain, went on to make a fine century from 133 balls and remained unbeaten on 129 as Somerset were dismissed for 342.

By the close of play Warwickshire were 56 for five as Green carried on with the ball where he’d left off with the bat. He claimed three wickets in five overs for just 10 runs as Somerset ended the second day very much in the driving seat.

DAY ONE

Somerset are in Second XI Championship action this week when we take on Warwickshire at Edgbaston Community Sports Ground.

Play was due to get under way at 11am today (Monday April 17th) but unfortunately no play was possible on day one.
