Second XI Championship: Somerset v Worcestershire - Day Four



Worcestershire completed victory on the fourth and final day of this Second XI County Championship match against Somerset at Taunton Vale Sports Club.

Somerset resumed on 52 for two in our second innings, requiring 435 more runs for victory with eight wickets remaining.

Lewis Goldsworthy and Will Smeed took the score to 79 before the former fell for 18 and by lunch Somerset were 96 for three.

After the interval, Smeed reached his half century, but he was bowled by Mitchell Stanley shortly after to leave Somerset on 118 for four.

Sam Young and James Rew took Somerset to 142 at which point the young ‘keeper was caught by Alex Milton off the bowling of Josh Tongue for 12.

At the tea interval, Somerset were 182 for six. That soon became 182 for seven when Young fell for 44 in the second over after the interval.

The hosts were eventually all out for 217 as Worcestershire won by 269 runs.

Second XI Coach Greg Kennis has named the following squad: Sonny Baker, Jack Brooks, Eddie Byrom, George Drissell, Matt Foster (Cardiff UCCE), Lewis Goldsworthy, Ben Green, Tom Lammonby, Ned Leonard, James Rew, Will Smeed and Sam Young.


Somerset resumed on 181 for six on day three of this Second XI County Championship match against Worcestershire at Taunton Vale.

Despite 68 not out from Lewis Goldsworthy, the home side were all out for 206. Somerset claimed one batting point whilst Worcestershire collected three bowling points.

By lunch, the visitors were 57 without loss in their second innings. This had advanced to 172 for four by tea, a lead of 432 runs.

After tea, Worcestershire eventually declared on 226 for five and by the close of play Somerset were 52 for two, requiring a further 435 runs with eight wickets remaining.


Worcestershire resumed on 306 for five on day two of this Second XI County Championship match against Somerset at Taunton Vale Sports Club.

The visiting batsmen continued to accrue runs in the morning session and by the time play reached the 110 over bonus point mark, Worcestershire had claimed four batting points whist Somerset had achieved two bowling points.

Ross Whiteley advanced his overnight 53* to 92 before he was bowled by Ned Leonard and by the time the lunch interval arrived, Worcestershire were 453 for nine curtesy of a 50-plus 10th wicket stand between Logan and Josh Tongue. The latter was the last man out, for 53 as the visitors posted a total of 466 all out.

The visitors then made an early breakthrough when Tom Lammonby was caught by Alex Milton off the bowling of Adam Finch for 0 to leave the hosts on two for one.

Somerset reached the tea interval at 72 for two.

After the interval the hosts slipped to 127 for six, but a half century seventh wicket stand between Lewis Goldsworthy (59*) and George Drissell (25*) saw Somerset to the close of play without further loss.

Somerset will resume tomorrow morning on 181 for six.


Somerset began a Second XI County Championship match against Worcestershire at Taunton Vale Sports Club today.

Play got underway at 11:30am.

Worcestershire won the toss and elected to bat.

The visitors made a solid start as openers Jack Haynes and Josh Dell brought up Worcestershire’s 50 from 89 balls. The pair then saw their team through to the lunch interval at 100 without loss.

After the interval, Ben Green claimed two quick wickets to reduce Worcestershire to 127 for two.

Dell and Alex Milton took the visitors to the 150-mark in the 49th over. Milton eventually fell to Green for 57 at 210 for three. Three further runs were then added to the total before tea was taken.

After the break, Dell was out for 82 at 265 for four and by the close Worcestershire had reached 306 for five.
