Second XI Friendly: Somerset come out on top

An exceptional partnership between Eddie Byrom and Tim Rouse was the deciding factor as Somerset Second XI beat University of Exeter in a one-day friendly at Taunton Vale Sports Club.

University of Exeter won the toss and elected to bowl.

The visiting bowlers made a strong start and Somerset slipped to 39 for two.

However, Eddie Byrom and Tim Rouse got Somerset back on track in fine style with a third wicket partnership of 142.

The pair brought up Somerset’s 50 in the eighth over and went on to take their side to three figures during the 19th.

The two young batsmen then took Somerset to 150 in the 26th over but, with the scoreboard showing 181, Byrom fell for 94. His runs had come from 95 balls and included 11 fours and a six.

Rouse went on to make an eye-catching 108 from 117 balls in an innings that included 13 fours and a six.

A rapid 32 not out from just 21 balls from Jack Leach plus 16* from eight balls from Somerset Captain Max Waller meant that the home side posted a total of 313 for seven from their 50 overs.

The Somerset bowlers then showed excellent control and stifled the opposition batsmen meaning that the students were always struggling to keep up with the required run rate.

Matt Clarke made 56 and his partnership of 83 for the second wicket with Drewe gave his side hope, but Somerset’s experienced attack ensured that their total was never in danger.

University of Exeter were eventually dismissed for 239 with five balls to spare.

Jamie Overton was the pick of the bowlers with three for 35 whilst Jack Brooks claimed two for 44.
