Somerset Second XI continued their pre-season programme with a two-day pre-season match against Surrey at Taunton Vale Sports Club which got underway at 11am on Tuesday (April 12th).

SCORECARD & VIDEOS

DAY TWO

Surrey resumed on 78 for five, trailing by 148 runs.

Three wickets each for Ollie Sale and Josh Davey ensured that the visitors were reduced to 150 for nine at lunch.

It was Somerset who came out to bat after the break.

Although Dylan Church fell early, George Bartlett and Will Smeed added 60 for the second wicket until the latter fell for 26.  Bartlett reached his 50 from 70 balls and by the time the tea interval arrived, the hosts were 92 for two, a lead of 168.

Somerset declared during the interval.

Josh Davey had Justin Broad caught behind by Jamie Baird with just two runs on the board, and the score had reached five for one when the players left the field due to rain.

No further play was possible and the match was therefore drawn.

DAY ONE

On the opening day, the toss was uncontested and Somerset batted first.

Somerset openers James Rew and Dylan Church made a solid start and the pair brought up the Somerset 50 in the 16th over.

Rew reached his half century from 74 balls and by the time the lunch interval arrived, the hosts were 92 without loss.

After the break, the Somerset pair took their partnership to three figures before Church was dismissed for 31 at 106 for one. George Bartlett, returning to action following a shoulder injury that he picked up ahead of Somerset’s LV= Insurance County Championship match at Hampshire last week, was the new man, but he became Amar Virdi’s second scalp when he was stumped by Josh Blake for eight with the score on 130.

Rew and Will Smeed took Somerset past 150 in the 47th over and brought up the half century stand for the third wicket shortly thereafter.

Rew deservedly reached triple figures from 158 balls, but he eventually fell just before tea for 112. His outstanding innings came from 177 balls and included 15 fours and a six.

At tea Somerset were 226 for three. The not out batters were Will Smeed (51*) and Noah Davis (1*).

The declaration came during the interval and in the final session of the day Ned Leonard made an early breakthrough when, with the score on five, he bowled Sheridon Gumbs for 0 in the second over of the Surrey reply.

Josh Davey and Ollie Sale then struck to remove Justin Broad and Jamie Overton respectively as the visitors slumped to 32 for three.

By the close of play Surrey were 78 for five, trailing by 148 runs.

Second XI Coach, Greg Kennis has named the following squad for the fixture: Ollie Sale (c), Josh Davey, Ned Leonard, Marchant de Lange, Will Smeed, George Bartlett, James Rew, Josh Thomas (Academy), Noah Davis (Academy), Fin Hill (Academy), Jack Harding (PSPP) and Dylan Church (Exeter University).
