Second XI: Victory for Warwickshire on Day Three
A stunning performance from Tom Banton wasn’t enough to prevent Somerset suffering a heavy defeat against Warwickshire on day three of this four-day Second XI friendly against Warwickshire at Taunton Vale Sports Club.
After a delayed start Somerset eventually resumed on 188 for eight.
The home side were eventually dismissed for 208, still 306 behind their opponents who enforced the follow-on.
Somerset fared better second time around as Banton smashed his way to a superb 192 from 173 balls in an innings that included 20 fours and 11 sixes. Ollie Sale also contributed a run-a-ball 45 as Somerset made 339 all out in their second innings.
Unfortunately for the home side, Warwickshire reached their required total for the loss of just one wicket to win the match by nine wickets.
Second XI Coach, Greg Kennis has named the following squad for the match: Eddie Byrom, Tom Banton, George Bartlett, Tim Rouse, Tom Lammonby, Fin Trenouth, Lewis Goldsworthy, Tim Groenewald, Ollie Sale, Paul Van Meekeren, Fred Klaasen (Holland) and Nathan Gilchrist.

Warwickshire resumed on 416 for six on day two of this four-day Second XI friendly at Taunton Vale Sports Club.
Robert Yates and George Panayi took the score to 432 before the players left the field due to bad light just before 11am.
The players returned shortly after and Panayi went to his 50 before being removed by Paul van Meekeren to put the visitors on 478 for seven.
By the time the lunch interval arrived Warwickshire were 486 for seven with Yates unbeaten on 195.
After the interval Warwickshire were eventually all out for 514 with Yates carrying his bat on 212 not out. Tim Rouse was the pick of the Somerset bowlers claiming four for 93.
The Somerset first innings got off to the worst possible start as the hosts slipped to 29 for two.
George Bartlett (33) and Rouse (37) got Somerset back on track but they both fell with the score on 92 on the stroke of tea.
Bad light stopped play during the final session by which point Somerset had reached 156 for five. When the players returned, Fin Trenouth reached 41 from 27 balls.
By the close of play Somerset had moved to 188 for eight. The not out batsmen were Lewis Goldsworthy (30) and Fred Klaasen (0).
Somerset Second XI began a four-day friendly match against Warwickshire at Taunton Vale today where by the close Warwickshire had reached 416 for six off 96 overs.
Somerset won the toss and after putting the visitors into bat first, openers Robert Yates and Ed Pollock looked to be untroubled as they took the score onto 160 without loss by lunch.
Soon after the break Tim Rouse made the breakthrough when he accounted for Pollock for 79 with the score on 175.
Despite this setback the Warwickshire batsmen continued to thrive through the afternoon and by the time that tea was taken the total had moved onto 300 of three of which Yates had contributed an unbeaten 117.
Straight after the interval Ollie Sale gave the hosts something to celebrate when he struck twice in an over to make Warwickshire 301 for four.
The fifth wicket pair added 69 together before Somerset agains claimed two wickets in three balls.
First up it was Aaron Thomason who was out LBW to Groenewald for 36 off the fifth ball of the 82nd over, then at the opposite end Paul van Meekeren had Alex Mellor LBW with the first delivery of the 83rd.
There was no further joy for the hosts as Warwickshire took their total onto 416 without further loss by which time Yates was unbeaten on 166.
For Somerset off spinner Rouse ended with two for 68 off 28 overs, of which eight were maidens while Sale claimed two for 78 off his 13, with two maidens.Back to News
