Second XI: Sussex v Somerset T20 x 2

Somerset Seconds are in action on Tuesday when they face their Sussex counterparts in two T20 games at Horsham Cricket Club, the first of which gets underway at 11.30am.

Game Two

The second game begun with Sussex winning the toss and electing to bat first. After hitting the first ball of the match for four, Salt fell to Michael Leask in the second. It was a repeat of Sunday with Tom Banton executing the stumping from Leask’s bowling.

It was Wells this time for Sussex that provided the fireworks, scoring 80 from 48 balls. There were 2 wickets each for Fionn Hand and Joe Gore, but Sussex still passed 200 and ended their innings 207 for seven.

Unfortunately despite Tom Abell blitzing 62 from just 26 balls, Somerset never got going in their innings and were bowled out for 148 in the 18th over.

Game One

It was Sussex that came out on top in the first of two Twenty20 matches at Horsham, with the hosts defeating Somerset by 7 wickets.

After winning the toss and elected to bat, Somerset began well with Ryan Davies particularly aggressive in scoring 31 from 16 balls before he was caught with the score on 47 in just the 4th over. Both Eddie Byrom and Tom Abell fell cheaply but Tom Banton proved an able partner for opener Tim Rouse. Rouse went on to score an impressive 68 from 47 balls, including 7 fours and 2 sixes. Dom Bess also came to the party with 39 from 19 balls as Somerset finished with 193 for 7 from 20 overs.

Despite the early loss of Wells, the hosts batted confidently in the run chase with Salt and van Zyl scoring 70’s. Sussex reached their target with 4 balls to spare despite an impressive bowling effort from Will Pereira (Loughborough), who claimed 1 for 20 from 3.2 overs

Ahead of the game Second XI coach Steve Snell said: “Tom Banton and Michael Leask who both played at Middlesex will be playing in the games and Jack Leach is back with us to get some match practice.

“Several of the team- Ben Green, George Bartlett and Tom Lammonby are away on England Under 19 duty which gives some of the other batters a chance to push their case for selection in T20 for the first team.

“The Sussex side in one of the matches is likely to contain Tymal Mills who is a bowler of real pace which will be a test for the boys

Steve added: “With Ollie Sale being rested it gives us a chance to look at Will Pereira from Loughborough and it also gives Joe Gore an opportunity.”

The Somerset squad for the T20 matches is- Tim Rouse, Ryan Davies ,Eddie Byrom ,Tom Abell,Tom Banton ,Michael Leask ,Dom Bess ,Jack Leach ,Louie Shaw ,Will Pereira Joe Gore and Fionn Hand.
