Second XI T20: Somerset v Essex
Somerset are in T20 action today when we welcome Essex to Taunton Vale Sports Club for a double header.
Essex win by 31 runs
Somerset won the toss and elected to bowl.
Jack Brooks made an early breakthrough when he bowled Nick Browne for two to put the visitors on 16 for one.
However, Michael Pepper and Ravi Bopara brought up the Essex 50 in the fifth over. Pepper then went to his 50 from 24 balls before his side reached three figures from the first ball of the ninth over.
Pepper and Bopara shared a century stand before the former England man fell to Brooks for 35 from 26 balls at 137 for two.
Pepper reached his century from 44 balls but fell one ball later when he was caught behind off Josh Davey.
Wickets then fell quickly but the visitors received the additional benefit of six penalty runs after Somerset were penalised for a slow over rate.
Eventually Essex posted a formidable looking total of 242 for nine from their 20 overs.
Chasing 243 for victory, openers Eddie Byrom and Ben Green made a solid start and brought up the Somerset 50 from just 26 balls.
The pair put on 73 before Byrom was dismissed for 51 from 23 balls. Green (30 from 16) then fell to leave Somerset on 87 for two.
Tom Lammonby and George Bartlett brought up the Somerset 100 in the 10th over and the pair took the score to 149 when Lammonby was out for an impressive 43 from 23 balls. Bartlett (24) then fell at 160 for four from the final ball of the 15th over.
Tim Rouse made a quickfire 38 not out, but unfortunately Somerset’s valiant run chase fell short as Essex won the match by 31 runs.
Essex won the toss and elected to bat.
Essex win by 97 runs.
Davey gave the hosts a dream start when he dismissed Nick Brown with the score on four and when Nathan Gilchrist then accounted for Patel and Pepper, Essex had slipped to 43 for three.
Davey claimed a second when he accounted for Khushi with the score on 61 and when debutant Tom Hall who is on the Somerset Pathway, claimed two in two balls making Essex 99 for 6 in the 11th over the hosts were looking to be in a good place.
However Ravi Bopara when was joined by Shane Snater the situation changed as the Essex pairing added 128 to help the visitors post 227 for six. Bopara ended unbeaten on 122 off 50 balls with 13 fours and seven sixes.
When Somerset replied Eddie Byrom hit 17 at the top of the order and Tom Lammonby at number four made 19, however several batsmen were dismissed cheaply and the hosts found themselves 67 for seven.
Davey then hit 33 off 21 balls, adding 26 for the eighth wicket with Hall who made 17 off 16 and 35 with Jack Brooks who made an unbeaten 16 for the ninth before Somerset were all out for 130 in the 16th over.
