Second XI T20: Comprehensive derby win for Somerset

Somerset warmed up for this week’s Vitality Blast opener against Essex Eagles with a comprehensive eight-wicket win over local rivals Gloucestershire at Taunton Vale Sports Club in the Second XI T20 competition.

Two strong sides were named and after winning the toss, Somerset Captain, Lewis Gregory elected to bowl.

Good opening spells from Kasey Aldridge and Jack Brooks accounted for the visiting openers, Miles Hammond and George Scott as Gloucestershire slipped to 20 for two.

After the six-over powerplay, the visitors were 42 for two. Gregory then turned to spin and Max Waller trapped Ian Cockbain lbw for seven.

Glenn Phillips and George Hankins added 40 for the fourth wicket but the latter was caught and bowled by Roelof van der Merwe. 82 for four became 97 for five when Waller struck again and ended Phillips’ entertaining knock. Gloucestershire’s overseas signing fell lbw for 50 from 32 balls.

The departure of the New Zealander signaled the end of Gloucestershire’s resistance and the visitors limped to 148 for nine from their allotted overs.

Brooks, Waller and van der Merwe all claimed two wickets.

The Somerset reply got off to an explosive start as Tom Banton and James Hildreth brought up the Somerset 50 from just 19 balls.

Banton fell for 38 from only 13 balls with the score on 53.

Hildreth and van der Merwe then added 57 from 31 balls until the Netherlands international was lbw to Ollie Price for 28.

Hildreth went on to make 58 from 36 deliveries and finished the match with a big six off Hammond. Tom Abell was the other not out batsman with 23 from 13 balls.

Somerset won by eight wickets from just 12.4 overs.
