Second XI T20: Ben and George take Somerset to big win

A mammoth second wicket stand helped Somerset beat Northamptonshire by 61 runs in the Second XI T20 competition at Taunton Vale Sports Club today.

Northamptonshire won the toss and elected to bowl.

Although the hosts lost Eddie Byrom for seven with 15 on the board, Ben Wells and George Bartlett took Somerset to 42 for one by the end of the six-over powerplay.

The pair brought up the Somerset 50 in the seventh over and the 50 partnership came shortly after from just 32 balls.

Wells then went to 50 from 37 balls and the Somerset 100 came in the 11th over.

The pair eventually shared a stand of 216 as the hosts reached 231 for two from their 20 overs.

Wells made 111 not out, whilst Bartlett was dismissed for 100 with the very last ball of the innings.

Ben Curran and Gus Miller shared a 59-run opening stand until the former was bowled by George Drissell for 14. Drissell then accounted for Miller (41) and the visitors were 70 for two.

Amrit Basra (36 from 20 balls) gave his side hope, but the Somerset bowlers were always on top and restricted the run rate effectively.

At the end of their 20 overs, Northants had reached 170 for eight. Drissell, George Thomas and Kasey Aldridge each claimed two wickets apiece.

The toss was uncontested and Northamptonshire batted first.

71 off 44 balls from Dan Lincoln helped the visitors to a total of 207 for six from their 20 overs. Ned Leonard was the pick of the bowlers, claiming three for 43.

The Somerset reply got off to the worst possible start as the hosts slipped to 11 for two after three overs.

Ben Wells and James Rew then added 71 for third wicket until the former fell for an excellent 43 from just 22 balls.

Rew fell to the final ball of the 10th over for 31 to leave Somerset on 87 for four and Sam Young was dismissed for the addition of just three to the total.

Jamie Baird and George Thomas brought up the Somerset 100 in the 13th over and added 49 for the seventh wicket.

Unfortunately, the pair both fell with the score on 141 and Somerset could only manage 157 for eight from their 20 overs as the visitors won by 50 runs.

Second XI Coach, Greg Kennis named the following squad: Kasey Aldridge, Jamie Baird, Sonny Baker, George Bartlett, Jack Brooks, Eddie Byrom, George Drissell, Ned Leonard, James Rew, George Thomas, Ben Wells and Sam Young.
