Second XI T20 Report: Somerset claim two impressive wins
Somerset Second XI are in T20 action today when we play two games against Surrey at LSE New Malden.
Match One – Somerset win by 9 wickets
Somerset produced a clinical performance in the first T20 at LSE New Malden, defeating Surrey by 9 wickets with 7.3 overs to spare.
After winning the toss and electing to bowl first, Somerset restricted Surrey to just 105/8 in their 20 overs. The hosts never got going and wickets fell at regular intervals. Jack Brooks was the star of the show with 3 wickets for just 11 runs in his four overs, whilst the leg-spin of Stephen Croft (Buckinghamshire) returned 2/12 from his allotment.
The run chase was never in any doubt as the in-form Eddie Byrom and Ben Green shared 73 for the opening wicket from just 8.2 overs. Byrom reached fifty from just 26 balls and despite a brief rain break, was able to lead his side home with an unbeaten 69 from 38 balls.
Match Two – Somerset win by 9 wickets
Somerset completed a second victory over Surrey in a game that followed a very similar pattern to the one played earlier in the day.
Again Somerset won the toss and elected to bowl first. When Mark Stoneman skied an attempted pull off the bowling of Nathan Gilchrist, the hosts found themselves 21/3 halfway through the final powerplay over. Jordan Clark provided some resistance for the hosts, clubbing 59 from 38 balls, but the damage had been done and wickets at the death saw Surrey 120 all out from 19.1 overs. Ollie Sale was the pick of the bowlers this time around, claiming 4/13 from 4 overs.
Somerset opted to give George Bartlett an opportunity opening the batting, and didn’t disappoint. The 21-year-old scored a fine 69 not out from 46 balls as the visitors cruised to 126 for the loss of just Ben Green for 33. There were 5.2 overs still remaining when the winning runs were scored.
Second XI Coach, Greg Kennis named the following squad: Eddie Byrom, Ben Green, Steven Davies, George Bartlett, Tim Rouse, Ben Wells, Josh Davey, Ollie Sale, Jack Brooks, Nathan Gilchrist, Charlie Reed and Stephen Croft.
