Somerset claimed a 27-run victory over Warwickshire on a record breaking day in the Second XI T20 competition at Edgbaston Community Sports Ground.

Warwickshire won the toss and elected to bowl.

By the end of the six-over powerplay, brothers George and Josh Thomas had taken Somerset to 93 without loss. Their 50 partnership coming from just 20 balls. The pair then took Somerset to three figures after seven overs.

George was the first to reach his half century from just 20 balls, with his brother reaching the same landmark from 28 balls. Josh eventually fell for 52 in the ninth over with the score on 113.

George and Andy Umeed brought up Somerset’s 150 in the 13th over, and the pair shared a second wicket stand of 84 before the latter was dismissed for 39 from 24 balls at 197 for two.

George’s 100 came from just 53 balls and included 11 fours and five sixes. He finished unbeaten on 116 from 57 balls as Somerset posted a total of 235 for two from their 20 overs.

This is Somerset’s highest ever score in Second XI T20 cricket, beating the previous best of 231 for two against Northants in 2021.

The hosts made a solid start and had reached 50 without loss from the opening six powerplay overs. Ethan Brookes and Jacob Bethell shared an opening stand of 60 before the former was caught by wicket keeper, Thomas Rew off the bowling of Kian Roberts for 27.

Bethell then shared a 104-run partnership for the second wicket with Theo Wylie (51 from 26) to take his side to 164 for two. Bethell eventually fell for 81 from 47 balls at 176 for three in the 17th over.

Warwickshire ran out of overs and finished on 208 for five as Somerset held on for victory.
