Second XI Trophy: Somerset win thriller

An impressive half century from Jamie Overton saw Somerset to a dramatic one-wicket Second XI Trophy win over Essex at Billericay CC today.

Chasing 201 for victory, Somerset were looking down the barrel until Overton took the game by the scruff of the neck.

Somerset won the toss and elected to bowl.

Overton struck early for Somerset when he bowled Aaron Beard for 11 with 25 runs on the board.

Michael Pepper and Feroze Khushi took Essex to 71 before the latter was trapped lbw by Ben Green for 14. Green then struck again when Rishi Patel was caught by Tom Lammonby to leave the hosts on 73 for three.

Pepper and William Buttleman brought up the Essex 100 in the 31st over but shortly afterwards Buttleman fell to Jack Leach for 14.

The score had reached 161 in the 43rd over when Pepper was trapped lbw by Ollie Sale for 83. Once the Essex opener had been removed the momentum lay with Somerset and the hosts eventually reached 200 for seven from their 50 overs.

Green was the pick of the bowlers with two for 16 from 10 overs.

The Somerset reply got off to a difficult start and openers Eddie Byrom and Steve Davies were back in the pavilion with just 36 runs on the scoreboard.

Wickets continued to fall but Tom Lammonby played the anchor role in a bid to steady the Somerset reply. However, when he fell for an attritional 28 from 61 balls Somerset were 107 for six in the 27th over.

However, a stunning 68 from just 48 balls from Overton got Somerset right back in to contention. When he eventually fell Somerset still needed 34 runs with just two wickets remaining.

When Sale fell, the visitors were 178 for nine, but Max Waller (25*) and Nathan Gilchrist (12*) saw Somerset over the line with one wicket to spare. Waller hit the winning four off the final ball of the 40th over.
