Second XI Trophy: Tom and Max inspire Somerset to victory
Somerset got our 2018 Second XI Trophy campaign off to a winning start today against Kent at Polo Farm, Canterbury.
Tom Banton and Max Waller were the stand out performers in the 107 run victory.
Somerset captain Peter Trego won the toss and elected to bat.
Openers Johann Myburgh and Banton made a solid start and put on 66 for the opening wicket before the more experienced man was removed for 38 from just 24 balls. Trego was then bowled by Callum Haggett without addition to the score and when Tim Rouse was dismissed Somerset were 129 for three.
Banton impressed at the crease and went on to make an excellent century before being trapped lbw by Adam Riley for 106 from 72 balls.
George Bartlett was also in good form and his 45 runs helped to ensure that Somerset posted a total of 287 all out from 47.5 overs.
In reply Kent’s openers started well as Ollie Robinson and Harsh Kumar put on 82 for the first wicket but three quick wickets for Max Waller reduced the hosts to 90 for three.
From that point onwards the Somerset bowlers were in control and tightened the screw as Kent were eventually dismissed for 180 from 41.5 overs.
Waller was the pick of the bowlers claiming four for 19 from eight overs plus a run out. Roelof van der Merwe took two for 37 whilst there was a wicket each for Ben Green and Tim Rouse.
