Second XI Trophy semi-final: Tom inspires Somerset to victory
A stunning performance from Tom Banton helped Somerset overcome Warwickshire in the semi-final of the Second XI Trophy at Moseley CC.
Somerset won toss and elected to bat.
After losing two early wickets Banton and George Bartlett added 151 for the third wicket. Bartlett was the man to go for 64 from 66 balls as Somerset reached 192 for three. Banton and Eddie Byrom then added 81 for the fourth wicket before the latter was dismissed for 25.
However, Banton went on to make a superb 156 from just 146 balls before falling at 287 for five.
Somerset were eventually all out for 300 in 49.1 overs.Oliver Hannon-Dalby was the pick of the bowlers claiming seven for 35 from his 10 overs.
Chasing 301 for victory the hosts got off to a solid start as Ed Pollock and Dominic Sibley put on 49 for the opening wicket.
When Sibley (48) was caught and bowled by Max Waller Warwickshire were 106 for two. Sam Hain (39), Will Rhodes (44) and George Panayi (37) made solid contributions but the Somerset bowlers, lead by Ben Green (four for 61), strangled the home batsmen as the innings drew to a close and Warwickshire were all out 286 from 49.2 overs as Somerset won by 14 runs to reach the final.

14:30 – A slight lower order collapse has seen Somerset all out for 300 at Moseley CC. Hannon-Dalby was the standout performer for the hosts, taking 7/35 from 10 overs.
14:05 – A large total is definitely on the cards as Tom Banton passes 150! He has nearly scored 1000 runs for the 2nd XI this year!
13:28 – Somerset beginning to accelerate here and with 7 wickets in hand, should be set for a big total with the score 220/3 from 37 overs.
13:14 – 100 for Tom Banton! That’s a cracking knock from him and Somerset are 199/3 from 34 overs. George Bartlett was the man to go for 64.
12:55 – George Bartlett goes to fifty as well here at Moseley CC from 55 balls and including 5 fours. Somerset building a good platform with the score 163/2 from 30 overs.
12:30 – And that is fifty for Tom Banton, following his hundred against Middlesex earlier in the week. He reaches the milestone from 67 balls with 6 boundaries. Unfortunately didn’t quite take his opportunity in the Royal London One-Day Cup but has scored very heavily for the 2nd XI this season and looked in fine form today.
