Big win for 2nd XI at Surrey

Somerset Second XI enjoyed an excellent start to their 50-over Trophy campaign by comfortably beating their Surrey counterparts at Purley CC.

Having won the toss, Somerset elected to bat and made an impressive start as Jim Allenby and George Bartlett put on 102 for the opening wicket before the One-Day Captain was bowled for 39.  Bartlett went on to make 65 before he fell to make Somerset 132 for two.

Johann Myburgh and Ryan Davies added 45 for the third wicket before the former was out 11 whilst Davies passed the half-century mark and eventually made 62 from 59 balls before he was dismissed by Ryan Patel with the score on 199.

Adam Hose then upped the run rate as he smashed his way to an exceptional 76 from just 44 balls as he and Eddie Byrom added 94 for the fifth wicket.  Byrom also impressed as his 60 not out ensured that Somerset posted an impressive total of 349 for seven from their 50 overs.

The Surrey reply got off to the worst possible start when Patel was bowled by Ben Green with the scoreboard on just five.  A 55-run partnership between Arun Harinath and Ollie Pope got the home side back on track but Max Waller then accounted for Pope to leave Surrey on 60 for two.  Harinath was then bowled by Bess just four runs later and when the same bowler struck again shortly after Surrey we in trouble again at 72 for four.

That soon became 74 for five when Euan Woods was caught by Jim Allenby to give Waller another scalp.  A 63 run sixth wicket partnership between Stuart Meaker and Conor McKerr gave Surrey a glimmer of hope but wickets continued to fall and when Meaker was caught and bowled by Michael Leask at 166 for eight Somerset looked home and dry.  However, Ravi Rampaul had other ideas as he helped himself to 54 runs off 30 balls but it was a case of too little too late.  When he fell to Johann Myburgh Surrey were all out for 235 to give Somerset the win by 114 runs.

Waller was the pick of the Somerset attack claiming three for 39 from his ten overs.

The Second XI are next in action on Wednesday when they welcome Unicorns to Taunton Vale in the Trophy
