Somerset CCC Media Intern: Updated Terms

Somerset CCC would like to make the following statement regarding the terms of the recently advertised Media Internship position.

From Somerset CEO Gordon Hollins:

“Offering Internship opportunities without direct remuneration has been commonplace across professional sport for several years and remains so today.  In Somerset’s case, there is evidence that the experience of spending time on matchdays observing the work of others and ‘having a go’ themselves provides an invaluable opportunity for those without the experience necessary to carry the responsibility of doing an actual job, the chance to learn and go on to secure full-time employment within the sport/entertainment sector.

“Providing opportunities for people to develop and learn is at the heart of our philosophy as a Club. On the field, this has, and continues to be demonstrated through our Talent Pathway/ Academy, with so many young people from the South-West going on to enjoy successful careers as professional cricketers and in some cases, represent their country. We are proud of that, and as Chief Executive, despite the considerable economic challenges created by the global pandemic, I am committed to providing opportunities for people to grow off the field of play too.

“Combined with offering paid positions (we have recruited/are recruiting for a full-time Graphic Designer and Digital Marketing Executive this year) in different parts of the Club, we will continue to offer Apprenticeships and Internships and Work Placements for talented people, which can be used to gain academic credit.  It is a priority for the Club to ensure such opportunities are available to people from all backgrounds and, where possible, reduce any barriers which make it difficult for some to apply.  We have formed partnerships with Taunton & Bridgwater and Weston Colleges which are designed to widen our links with the community and ensure Somerset CCC can provide opportunities for more people.  We are also developing specific initiatives, such as working with our Official Catering Partner to create opportunities which are appealing to people with additional needs.

“Feedback on how we go about achieving the objectives I have outlined, is always welcome.  We won’t always get it right.

Having reflected on this matter, and reviewed the applications we have received to date, it is clear that there is interest from people from different backgrounds.  Regardless, to ensure that as many people as possible feel in a position to apply, we have decided to pay the national minimum wage or living wage for these roles dependent on the age of the successful applicants.  The deadline for applicants is being extended by seven days to allow those who may not have felt in a position to apply, to do so.

“I trust that this provides some assurance that Somerset CCC is a Club trying to do the right thing by the communities it serves.”

Somerset CCC have extended the deadline of the role to the 11th of February, and all current applicants will be contacted about the changes to the role.
