Somerset Players Snapped up in The Hundred Draft
Sporting history was made this evening (Sunday October 20th) when The Hundred became the first major UK competition to host a player draft.
Each team selected their squads live on Sky Sports, with a maximum of three overseas picks who joined the already-announced England red-ball contracted players and Local Icons.
It was announced earlier this month that Tom Banton will represent Welsh Fire and tonight it transpired that he will be joined by Australian star batsman Steve Smith plus Australian pace bowler Mitchell Starc.
Regarding his new Australian teammates, Tom said: “Obviously it’s great to have those guys involved. I’m not sure I’m looking forward to facing Mitchell in the nets though! We all saw what Steve can do this summer, so to play alongside him is going to be really exciting.”
Six further Somerset players will also feature in The Hundred.
Tom Abell will line up for Manchester Originals after being selected in the second round.
Lewis Gregory was also picked in the second round and will be playing for Trent Rockets.
Netherlands International, Roelof van der Merwe was a third round pick for London Spirit.
Max Waller and Craig Overton were seventh round picks for Southern Brave whilst Eddie Byrom was also a seventh round selection, joining Manchester Originals.
Welsh Fire have selected the following line up for 2020:
Ryan ten Doeschate
Leus du Plooy
It was also revealed tonight that Australian Captain, Meg Lanning will be joining Welsh Fire for the Women’s Hundred.
After the announcement the Australian skipper said: “I’m absolutely delighted to be joining up with Matthew Mott at Welsh Fire. We obviously know each other really well from working together for Australia and hopefully that can give us an edge.
“It’s really exciting to see the women’s squads beginning to take shape, and hopefully alongside the men’s players who joined up in tonight’s draft we can give Welsh Fire a strong chance in the first season of The Hundred.”Back to News
