Somerset v Glamorgan: Pre-Season Match Preview

THE MATCH

Somerset will begin a three-day pre-season match against Glamorgan tomorrow (Friday April 2nd).

Play will begin at 12pm on day one and at 11am on days two and three.

HEAD TO HEAD

The two sides have played against each other in First Class cricket on 152 occasions. Somerset have won 38 of these fixtures, Glamorgan have won on 44 occasions whilst 70 have been drawn.

The highest total for Somerset in the series is 600 for eight declared at Taunton in 2001, while for Glamorgan it’s 574 for seven at Newport in 1939.

The highest innings by a Somerset batsman is 313* by Jimmy Cook at Sophia Gardens in 1990 and for Glamorgan it is 216 by Dai Davies, again in that 1939 match at Newport.

The best bowling in an innings for Somerset is nine for 51 by Jack White in 1932 at Bath and for Glamorgan it is eight for 42 by Brian Evans at Cardiff Arms Park in 1961.

The last time the two sides met in red-ball cricket was in last year’s Bob Willis trophy when Somerset came out on top by 289 runs at the Cooper Associates County Ground.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Somerset posted a total of 296 all out. Steve Davies top scored with 81 not out whilst Tom Lammonby contributed 41 on his First Class debut.

The Somerset bowlers were on top right from the off and the visitors were reduced to 38 for six in the 21st over. The visitors were eventually dismissed for 131. Craig Overton was the pick of the bowlers, claiming five for 38.

Batting for a second time, Somerset made 290 for eight declared. Tom Abell top scored with a superb 119 whilst Ben Green, batting as a concussion substitute for George Bartlett, added 54.

Despite 82 from Chris Cooke, the Somerset bowers again dominated and the visitors were all out for 166. Jamie Overton claimed five for 48.

Before the game, Jason said: “This is our last pre-season fixture, so the competition for places really starts to rise a little bit now. We will be looking to field a more experienced side as we look ahead to the Middlesex game.

“Everyone will be looking towards the Middlesex game, but it’s vital that we concentrate on the three days this weekend so that we can get as much out of it as we can.

“We’ve had a really productive pre-season so far and we need that to continue.”
