Somerset Women Season Preview
Somerset Women begin their 2021 season this weekend.
The team take on Staffordshire in two T20 matches at Fordhouses Cricket Club, Wolverhampton.
The first match starts at 11am with the second match scheduled to begin at 3pm.
Women and Girls Performance Manager, Dave Roberts is looking forward to the start of the campaign.
“The team are in a good place,” he said. “We’ve had some good training sessions and had a good run out last week in a friendly against Devon. Everyone is in a positive frame of mind and we are looking forward to what will hopefully be a successful summer.
“We’ve got a number of young players within the group and they have developed very quickly. Several of them have been involved with some excellent programmes throughout the winter with some selected on the Western Storm Academy as well. I’m really happy with the group of players that we have and hopefully they can go on to push for even bigger honours.”
Although it is a young squad, Somerset still have a number of big name players, as Dave explains.
“It’s great that we still have Sophie Luff with us. It’s been brilliant having her around the side and we’re looking forward to her showcasing her talents on the field for us.
“We also have Georgia Hennessey this year. She had a great summer with Western Storm last year. She’ll bat at the top of the order and will also bowl some decent overs in the middle of the innings. She’s a top quality cricketer.
“Nat Wraith is with us again and she’s another contracted player at Western Storm. She’s a really good keeper and will get us off to a positive start with the bat.
“Ellie Mitchell has joined us for this summer. She’s originally from Cornwall and is currently at university in Loughborough. She will also be representing Trent Rockets in The Hundred, so we are really happy to have her with us.”
How important is the link with Western Storm?
“I think it’s massive,” said Dave. “For our young players to be involved with quality senior pros who are now making their way in the professional game is great. They set a really good example for our girls to look up to.”
Is Dave confident that his side will have a successful season?
“If our players play to their full potential we should have a good summer,” he said. “I’m looking forward to seeing what the girls can produce when it matters.”Back to News
