Somerset Women top the table

Somerset Women completed another successful season yesterday.

Somerset were due to play a double header against Worcestershire but no play was possible due to the weather.

The abandonment of Warwickshire’s scheduled matches meant that Somerset finished top of the Women’s County T20 West Midlands Group.

Somerset Women & Girls Performance Manager, Dave Roberts is delighted by how well his side have performed this season. “The level of effort and intent that the girls have shown this season has been massive,” he said. “We’ve always been able to hold sides with the ball and our fielding has been outstanding. The batting from the likes of Sophie Luff and Georgia Hennessey has been fantastic as well. There have been lots of pluses and I’m really pleased with how things have gone over the last few weeks.

“I’m really proud of every single one of them. We’ve chopped and changed our squad a few times, but everyone who has come in has played their part and put in a good performance.

“It’s a bitter-sweet end to the season, because we’ve missed out on two more fixtures for the players. We would have liked to have finished things off by winning those two games, but we can’t control the weather and finishing top of the group is great.

“The younger players will have gained a huge amount of experience this year and I’m sure we will come back even stronger next year. Hopefully we will start seeing a few more girls from Somerset pushing on to Western Storm and then on to international honours soon.”

Somerset Captain, Sophie Luff said: “We’ve played some really good cricket this season. Georgia Hennessey has been outstanding with bat and ball and our spinners bowled really nicely. Somerset is an exciting place to be at the moment. We’ve got some players involved with Western Storm, some players on the Western Storm Academy and others pushing for those places. That just goes to show that the Pathway is working.

“I’ve been really impressed by how the young players have performed this year. They’ve come in and really held their own. It’s always positive having younger players in the dressing room. Their enthusiasm and their keenness to learn is always refreshing.”
