Somerset Women's Fixtures Announced

The Somerset Women’s fixtures for 2018 have now been published.

To get the very latest on what’s happening with the team, we spoke to SCB Women’s and Girls Performance Head Coach, Paul Lawrence.

We began by discussing how the Women’s team fared in 2017. As Paul explained, it was a mixed year.

“In 2017 we were promoted back to Division One of the 50-over competition but unfortunately we were relegated to Division Two in the T20,” he said. “We finished second in the table in the 50-over league after a very close battle all season with Hampshire. It went down to the last game of the season when we played each other and after a hard fought game they just came out on top and took the title. Obviously we would have loved to have gone up as champions but it just wasn’t to be.

“Things didn’t quite go our way in the T20 competition. We fought well and put in some good performances against the bigger counties so, although we were eventually relegated, we can still take some positives from it.”

Who were some of the standout performers for Somerset in 2017?

“Without doubt Sophie Luff was exceptional,” said Paul. “She was outstanding with the bat and the way she led the side was fantastic. Nicole Richards also impressed everyone with the ball last year and we had a number of contributions from the younger players with both bat and ball.”

What are his expectations ahead of the new campaign?

“It’s going to be tough playing against the bigger counties who can call on a number of England players but it’s a challenge that we’re looking forward to. In the 50-over competition we obviously really want to stay up and then build on that the following year. We’ve got a young squad and a lot of learning will have to take place in a short space of time but in the T20 we will be backing ourselves to get promotion back in to Division One.”
