Spotlight on Clarke Willmott

Over the course of the year, we will be introducing Somerset Members and supporters to some of the faces behind our commercial partners.

As part of the SCCC family, you’ll frequently see them watching games at the Cooper Associates County Ground, hosting events and attending networking sessions, so do stop and say hello!

Today is the turn of Chris Thorne to answer our questions.

Chris is Head Of Serious Injury and the Medical Negligence Department at the Club’s Preferred Legal Partner, Clarke Willmott.

Who are Clarke Willmott and what do you do?

Clarke Willmott is a national law firm, with offices across the country dealing with a wide range of legal issues, from international commerce to buying and selling your home. Although a national firm, we are very proud of our roots right here in Taunton where the business started not long after Somerset CCC came into existence.

What was it that made you want to partner with Somerset County Cricket Club? And what do you hope to achieve?

We have been the clubs “preferred legal partner” for many years and the connections run deep. Recent Past President of the club, Roy Kerslake, gave up his promising playing career after one season as Captain of Somerset to take up the law and was a partner at Clarke Willmott for the remainder of his working life, as successful off the pitch as he was on it. Not only have we represented the club as solicitors, we have maintained the tradition started by Roy with other former leading players following a similar route into post-cricket legal careers. We want to continue to build on and develop that mutually supportive relationship and in particular, to help the talented youngsters of Somerset and the wider South West generally to achieve their ambitions, be it in law or cricket, or occasionally both!

What can Members, supporters and club partners expect to see from Clarke Willmott over the next 12 months?

We have continued to grow our business in recent difficult times, honing and improving our existing expertise and developing new areas of practice with a view to supporting our clients, who in many instances have faced new and difficult challenges during the pandemic. Flexibility has been key to the way we have provided those services and we continue to adapt and learn. Our commitment to Somerset remains unwavering, it has a place at the heart of our business and we expect to unveil news of significant investment into our Taunton office in the New Year, making it fit for the new world of flexible working.
