Spotlight On: Nuffield Health

Somerset County Cricket Club and Nuffield Health are now in their sixth year of partnership.

As official healthcare partner to SCCC, Nuffield’s Taunton Hospital and Health & Wellbeing Gym provides the club with diagnostic services, including MRI and CT scans, as well as access to some of the best surgeons in the UK. The club makes great use of the gym membership, attending the fitness centre on East Reach.

Over the past six years Nuffield Health has treated numerous players for various injuries, all of whom have successfully returned to competitive cricket. Players are often able to have a diagnostic scan immediately after the injury occurs, receiving the diagnosis and treatment they need within days.

When asked about the value of the Nuffield Health partnership Jamie Thorpe, SCCC Head of Science & Medicine, said “The relationship between Somerset County Cricket Club and Nuffield Health is a fantastic one, it adds significant value to the manner in which we have been able to deliver medical care to our players, from the senior team to our pathway.

“The ability to access a superb medical facility which enables us to investigate injuries and consult with specialists in the best management is invaluable. This gives us a great confidence as a team, that should the players suffer any setbacks they are in the best hands to get them back playing as safe and as fast as possible.”

Nuffield Health is one of the leading not-for-profit UK healthcare organisations, looking after people for more than 60 years. Today, they run a network of hospitals, medical clinics, fitness and wellbeing clubs and diagnostic units across the UK.

Nuffield Health & Wellbeing Gym, located on East Reach, boasts a spacious, state of the art gym floor and includes the latest technology from Technogym, a company who are the leading supplier in their field. Facilities which Somerset CCC players are fortunate to take advantage of.

Joel Tratt, SCCC Lead Strength & Conditioning Coach, said “The facilities and the equipment at Nuffield Health & Wellbeing have had a huge impact on the way we train and the quality of work we can get done. From a conditioning perspective, the quality, quantity and range of equipment allows us to continually challenge the players physicality through consistent change of training stimulus.”

“The amount of equipment also allows us to train a large proportion of the squad in one hit, which without a doubt creates a strong bond amongst the boys, and I know it’s something they really enjoy. The strength equipment, and amount of free floor space, also allows us to get strong strength, pre-hab and mobility work through the players with high tech modern equipment that is of top quality.

“We also utilise the pool and spa facilities for rehab and other off feet conditioning work when the time is right with certain individuals. Like the gym area, these facilities are of the highest quality and the players certainly enjoy using them. All in all, our relationship with Nuffield and the ability to use their facilities plays a huge role in our strength and conditioning programme delivery and is one I look forward to continuing in the future”

Through their experts, Nuffield Health link their sites and services up to offer connected healthcare provision, including nutritional therapy, emotional wellbeing, occupational health, comprehensive health assessments, and personal training and hospital treatments. They also offer access to the largest network of physiotherapists outside of the NHS.

John Foley, Hospital Director at Nuffield Health Taunton Hospital, added: “We are delighted to support SCCC and would like to congratulate them on a successful season. All sportsmen and women know, amateur or professional, that when you get injured you need a clear diagnosis and an immediate treatment plan to get you on the road to recovery.”
