Staff Profile: James Voisey

There are a number of new faces in the Commercial Team at the Cooper Associates County Ground. Amongst them is James Voisey, Somerset County Cricket Club’s Commercial Sales Manager.

We caught up with James earlier this week to find out a little bit more about him.

“I’m originally from South London,” he explained. “I moved down to the South West when I took up a position with my previous employer, Plymouth Argyle in December 2015.”

Although he hails from the Country’s capital, he is no stranger to the region.

“My dad is from Plymouth, and I was brought up as an Argyle fan. We used to go down there a lot and we would plan our holidays around home matches at Easter and Christmas. I’ve still got family who live there and when I first started at Argyle, I lived with my nan for a few months to help get myself settled. I guess you could say that I’m an honorary West Country boy.”

Is professional sport something that James has always wanted to be involved in?

“Definitely,” he said. “When I started my higher education, I spent five years living in America on a football scholarship and did a sports management undergraduate degree there. I then spent a year coaching off the back of that whilst I was deciding what I wanted to do next.

“I got the opportunity to go to Leeds to do my masters in sport business and that really opened my eyes to the world of sports sponsorship, marketing and things like that. We did a lot of work with Leeds Rhinos Rugby League and that really sparked my interest and led me down this path.

“I just love sport. I watch and follow pretty much everything. There’s nothing better than going to a live sporting event. We’ve been starved of that over the last 18 months but being able to get back to that has been fantastic and I’m really looking forward to what will hopefully be a full campaign in 2022. I can’t wait to see the stands here full again like they were at the end of last season.”

James also explained how he arrived at Somerset CCC.

“I was approached by a former Somerset player who now works for a recruitment agency. We had a chat and I felt that this was a great opportunity for me to take the next step on my career ladder and move out of my comfort zone. I’m keen to bring the skills that I’ve learned to a new sport and hopefully I can bring something new to Somerset.”

How has James settled into the team?

“It’s been really good,” he said. “There’s a new look to the Commercial Team now under Caroline Herbert (SCCC Commercial Director) and I was only the newest person for a week. It’s been a period of change for the new people, but also for the existing members of staff. From what I’ve seen so far, I think we’ve got a really good mix, and everything has been really positive.”

What does his role comprise of?

“I’m responsible for driving revenue through sponsorship and advertising. Essentially, the more money that we bring in, the more we can reinvest into the playing staff, the facilities and the infrastructure of the Club.”

What does James hope to achieve in his time with the Club?

“Hopefully, I can make a difference and it would be great for the Club to have success on the pitch and continue to be a real shining light for sport in the South West. We’re a massive club in terms of our following both nationally and worldwide and it would be great to be able to play a part in helping that to continue to grow.”
