Tom Banton reflects on England Experience

Tom Banton was back at the Cooper Associates County Ground on Tuesday morning after being away captaining England Under 19s against South Africa.

The exciting top order batsman and wicket-keeper led England to a 2-0 victory in the Youth Test series in which he scored 137 in the opening match and ended with an average of 60.

“It was good fun and great to win the test series, but a bit disappointing in the one day series, but I certainly learnt a lot from my month away with England. I really enjoyed it!

“The century that I scored in the opening match at Scarborough was probably the best feeling that I have ever had on the cricket field and it was very special indeed.”

Regarding the captaincy Tom said: “I didn’t expect to be captain in both series but Tom Lammonby had to miss out through injury which was a shame. Jon Lewis the England Under 19 head coach asked me if I’d like to do it and I and haven’t looked back since.

“It’s always a great feeling to pull on an England shirt, but now I am done with England Under 19 cricket which is a bit of a shame. I have enjoyed my involvement very much, especially leading the side to victory in the test series, which was the first time for a long while.

Tom was out in the nets batting on Tuesday and has been added to the Somerset squad ahead of their Vitality Blast game at home to Hampshire this evening.

Having made his debut in tournament last year Tom is keen to get a taste of some more of the action this season.

“The boys are going well in the T20 at the moment so hopefully I can come in and do my bit, but if not I am more than happy to be part of the squad.

“Now I am back here at Somerset my target is to play first team cricket. Obviously it’s going to be hard to get into the T20 team but if I do then I would like to open the innings.”

Tom added: “I haven’t been at Taunton for any of the T20 games this summer but last year there was a great atmosphere and it was good fun to play in so hopefully it will be the same tomorrow.”
