Tom looks back on busy winter

It’s been a busy two months for Club Captain, Tom Abell.

The 27-year-old was a Member of the England Lions squad which travelled to Australia and was a part of the Brisbane Heat squad for this year’s Big Bash campaign.

Although a knee injury curtailed his time Down Under, it is a few weeks that he will never forget.

“The Lions tour was a fantastic experience,” he said when we spoke to him upon his return to the Cooper Associates County Ground. “I feel very privileged to have been away for the last couple of months. To be immersed in the England environment and to see how those players go about things and prepare for an Ashes series was great.

“I was fortunate enough to get a bit of game time on the trip and we had a really great group. I have certainly taken a lot from the experience and learned a lot.

“The England team is obviously something that you aspire towards, and you rarely get the opportunity to be around that environment. I feel very fortunate to have had that opportunity this winter. Being able to chat with the likes of Joe Root and Jos Buttler about playing at the top level and what it takes to succeed was brilliant for someone like myself because I’m trying to earn that opportunity. There is no doubt that I’ve taken a huge amount from my time with the Lions.”

Straight after England Lions game against Australia ‘A’, Tom joined up with Brisbane Heat for the Big Bash. Unfortunately, he picked up a knee injury in his second match and was forced to pull out of the competition and fly home.

“We also had a fantastic group at Brisbane,” he said. “Although I was only there for about a week, it was an unbelievable competition to be involved with and hopefully one day I’ll get that opportunity again.

“It was a really welcoming environment, and I had a great time there until it was unfortunately cut short. It was another incredible experience and opportunity for me.

“I was immersed in a group of some of the best players in the world. When you play with and against such top players it makes you a better player. Hopefully, I can bring these experiences and learnings back with me and help us here at Somerset.”
